Hi all :)

I'm looking in to getting a horse box but atm I'm clueless!
Idealy I'd be after something reasonably priced & economical to run, that can be driven on a normal license & can carry 2 horses, does such a thing exist?!

Or am I just better doing my trailer/box test?

Also if I was to look in to doing either trailer or box test does anyone know anywhere in Ayrshire that does lessons and tests? And what sort of prices should i expect?

Hi!

So long as the box is 3.5 tt or less, you can drive it on a regular license.

You can get 2 horses in some 3.5tt boxes, but it depends on the size of your horses and your buget.
I have 2 big horses and the only boxes of this size I've found that will take them are the newer (and more expensive) models.

This may help you with the licensing rules!

Think I've decided that I'm going to do my trailer license and get a big 2nd hand trailer & 4x4.
4x4 would also be useful next time we have snow!!

Good luck!

Depends on what you call reasonably priced.

There are 3.5T boxes out there that will just about carry 2 horses legally but they are the modern prof builds and they tend not to come cheap, i reckon you would realistically need 15K.

On the whole you can pick up reasonable 3.5T in the 3-6K bracket however although they may be roomy enough for 2 horses it is highly unlikely they will have legal payload. I had a really nice VWLT35. You could fit 2 x 17.2hh in there. In reality it had 800kg payload so would only legally carry 1 x 16.2hh + passengers + tack & water
