Hi,

I am looking to get a horsebox and wondered what's the oldest you would suggest to get e.g H reg?

Also I am 24 and have found that a few companies only insure over 25's, do you know any companies that insure over 21's and roughly how much it costs?

It's really frustrating me as I have done my B+E test over 2 years ago, then I did my Class 2 test year and I have now passed my Class 1 a couple of weeks ago so I can get into driving for a job yet nearly every company i've looked at only insures over 25's. They shouldn't let you take the test if they won't insure you.

Please help, thanks.

If your on a budget I wouldn't worry about the age of the lorry too much but avoid cargo's (rot) & make sure its got a tilt cab - I learnt that lesson the hard way :(

Drayton Insurance services insured me for £330 at 19 :) Stayed with them quite a while but at 23 switched as it was a bit cheaper - think it was SEIB. Now 25 and just got another quote of £150 :D

You might find it difficult to get a driving job until your 25. At 23 OH insured me on his lorry (32 ton!!) they charged about £1000 extra even though i had no points or convictions.

A while ago when I was looking at getting a lorry, I phoned up Four Counties for a rough quote and they would insure me. I'm only 19 so they might be worth a check. Can't say how good they are though compared to others as I ended up not getting a lorry.

I've only got a 3.5t (which is an F reg!) and I got insurance through horse and pony insurance on the web, I'm 23, and costs me 25 quid a month.

I wouldn't worry to much about the age more the condition and how well its been looked after, get a good mechanic to give it a prepurchase check and go from there. When I was looking a few years ago I was on a budget so just looked at ones in that budget regardless of age. I viewed a lovely V reg lorry that was in budget and had everything I wanted had my mechanic check it and found a list aas long as my arm wrong with it, I then went to see an N reg again liked it and mechanic said it was one fo the best of that age he had seen and was a good buy. Now every time I take it back to him for the MOT he still says its one of the best ones he has come in.

As for insurance from the age of 23 I have been insured by Drayton Insurance Serives so another vote for them. They were by far the cheapest back then and when I turned 25 my premiums can down also, Think when I was under 25 it was about £280 and now it is £230 for any driver over 25.

This is kinda not relevant so excuse me if pointless but I am a Class 1 lorry driver (female and nearly 31) and when I first became a truck driver for a living - 6 years ago, the insurance company wanted to charge me more for my car insurance now I was a 'professional' driver than when I was a secretary because they deemed that when I get into my car to drive myself home I was more fatigued than a secretary would have been thus posing a risk to other road users - total balls as I rather see myself as a better car driver now cos I can 'read' the road quicker than the majority of car drivers out there. So it depends on what you do for a living as to how much you will pay. But back to the horsebox insurance, I have a little Roadrunner that I pay £220 / year for insurance and I am in Reading so that hikes premiums up but I am older than you too. Have you tried Adrian Flux insurance - they reckon they insure younger people on everything..........fingers crossed

Thanks very much for all your help and advice everyone, I have noted down the insurance names and will look into them for quotes.

I was thinking that insurance might be around £800 so I am very relieved to know that it may be closer to the £300 mark instead!!

Thanks again xx
