Horsebox breakdown recovery recommendations please

Equine Rescue have come out to us both in the lorry and the trailer about 8 times and they've always been fab. They always ask on the phone whether we'd like a replacement vehicle to tow the trailer or a lorry instead, and they always bring full nets of hay or haylage for the horses. The operator rings back every 10mins or so to check everything's ok and they're good at liasing with the highways agency if you're stuck on the motorway.

It only costs £48 per year and for that you get someone to mend lorry/trailer/tyres, alternative horse transport to wherever you want, lorry/trailer taken to garage and overnight livery and human accommodation if needed.

. Yes that's who we use for the trailer but now I've thought about it the lorry insurance (South Essex) includes breakdown and horse/human transport.

I have mine through Anthony Evans (insurance broker) and is with Autohome Assist. It costs £89 a year. I don't know if its cheaper coz I have insurance through the same brokers? It covers me in my 7.5t lorry. I recently had to use the service coz I had a blow out on the motorway whilst taking my horse to an event. Unfortunately, the tyre blowout (explosion!) caused extensive damage to my lorry too! They were great. The Highways Agency worked with them, shut a lane off, and the breakdown people called a tyre service (the one I normally use, funnily enough). Anyway, I think they were both there within the hour, and Man No 1 put a new tyre on and then Man No 1 and Man No 2 fixed up the underside of my lorry so I could get home. The Highways Agency/ police then told me that I was OK to drive home. All costs were covered by my insurance and breakdown service, which was handy. The breakdown service kept me informed at all times too. They also said that that if my lorry couldn't be fixed, then the breakdown truck could tow me home, or if the lorry couldn't be towed "flat" then they could arrange to transfer my horse onto a rescue horsebox for me (they would have shut the entire M40 section for that!!).
Anyway, I recommend them!

I am with them too and after my lorry breaking down last Sunday I found out that horse recovery is NOT included. The costs have to be met in full by the horse owner. Sure they will call someone for you but you have to pay for all horse transport costs.

All that is covered is the lorry, they will tow or transport the lorry but not the horse.

Equine Rescue Services all the way! Been with them for a number of years and would never move-never ever had a bad time with them ever.

Would not touch AE as aries mentioned- IT IS ILLEGAL TO TOW A HORSE LORRY WITH A HORSE ON OTHER THAN TO GET OFF A MOTORWAY ETC AT THE REQUEST OF THE POLICE!

Hence why AE is so cheap! Bargain basement recovery!

I use Autohome through Anthony Evans Ins. I have used them several times over the years including twice last week and they have always been brilliant. I would recommend them without hesitation.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I do not think people should be slagged off without knowing all the facts first.
As far as I am concerned I feel that trailers are so dangerous and would never put my horses in them but that's a whole new topic..........

Always use Anthony Evans, although I have noticed they have gone up in price a little recently. However, I have had to call them twice for breakdown and had one total loss claim with them.

One was simple breakdown issue of engine, years back, no issues came and got me and recovered horse and lorry to home.

Year before last lost (due to faulty workmanship) whole axle on M23 past gatwick, not fun, two ponies on board and going to Championship! They got us down to championship in time, we stayed the night, lorry was total loss, not only did they recover us well, my claim was settled within 2 weeks and no arguements, so for that, having tried and tested them well, I recommend them.

Have stuck with with them because of this although they are getting slightly more expensive than others now.

I have mine through Shearwater - they have been superb both times I have used them, though only for tyre blow-outs, nothing serious. I got a cheaper quote from AE and Shearwater matched it, so worth asking about that. They are also completely happy with the fact that my horse will not travel in a trailer, and they will send a box instead as long as I remind them.
