As ESS have now folded and I read unfavourable reports of Anthony Evans (who I'm currently using) can anyone suggest breakdown cover that is tried and tested and they delivered? Possibilities are KBIS (although its Equity Red Star that do it) or OHTO, though OHTO are VERY expensive. Equally, I don't want to get stuck and have a traumatic experience so maybe its worth paying a lot. Thoughts?

Also with www.equine-rescue.co.uk if you break down towing a trialer they fix your car and bring a lorry out if they can't fix it. where most horse break down cover only covers you for the trailer and you have to call out your own car break down service 1st....

you say you have read unfavourable reports of AEvans, but have you ever actually needed them?

I have been with them for years and have called them out on various occasions with various horse loads, ranging from huge to mini, they have been quick, and fantastic...

What on earth have you heard? had them out in the last 12 months also and my premiums are cheap as chips!

Have heard horrors of SEIB cover tho...

I just got cover via NFU both comp insurance and full horsebox breakdown cover, It cost me £315 for both, I thought this was very cheap. The Breakdown was £115 which made me think it must be limited or something but they assured me it was full cover???

I used what I thought was ESS, but am confused now, last weekend and they were great. RAC came out, couldn't get the truck going, ESS sent someone out with a LandRover and they hitched up my trailer and took me, Marnie and the dogs home while the RAC took the truck separately, unloaded it at home and posted the keys through my letterbox! Couldn't fault either!

Ok ESS are now Equine Rescue. If you put www.equestriansupportservices.co.uk into your browser it will redirect to www.equine-rescue.co.uk but its the same staff and business as usual so no probs if you already have cover and they are taking on new policies too.

As for AE, only read bad reports on HHO but I'm afraid I'm not prepared to risk using them if I have, and hope not to use anyone really! Also, I'm only wanting to use someone who'll bring an alternative lorry and not just stick mine on the back of a truck.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Debbie MacMorran. I was Customer Services and Operations Manager with ESS, which of course was a division of the now failed HBG Assistance Limited. I thought you would like the official low down on what has been going on.

I was so proud of the achievements of the ESS team I felt the company was worth saving, so with the backing of Michael Cunningham, we were able to buy the ESS business from the administrators and it is now under totally new ownership – and Equine Rescue Services Limited has been born.

We have the same dedicated team in our control room/customer service and accounts departments and we are operating from the same base.

Everyone who was a member of ESS on the 23rd July (the date of administration) will now receive the same membership benefits from ERS.

Although there has been some interruption in getting payments processed, there has been no interruption in breakdown service – the team have continued to handle the breakdown assistance calls throughout the transition period.

It is our absolute number one priority to take care of our members and their horses – we all feel extremely passionate about placing the welfare of our customers and their horses in a breakdown situation above everything else.

I would like to say a huge thank you to our dedicated team at ERS, our members and all our agents for their loyal support over this transition period. I really appreciate it.

If you want to know more there is an FAQ for all our members on our new website – www.equinerescue.co.uk (note no hyphen). If anyone has specific questions relating to their own membership do phone customer services and we will do our best to help as always.

Thanks

Debbie MacMorran
Director, Equine Rescue Services Ltd

I have used British Equestrian Insurance Brokers for years and they have been very good particularly as they cover my 30 year old Bedford TK!

My friend has used Antonty Evans and received very bad service from him and never got an appology despite numerous letters and phone calls.

Please bear in mind that all these companies use sub-contractors to repair or recover your vehicle/horses so they are only as good as the sub-contractors.

My advice to anyone is to always carry two annually serviced large fire extinguishers in your cab and two in your container and ensure that you always have two new spare tyres with you.

Always carry at least 3 Hi Viz long armed jackets with you as well so that you are visible in the event of a breakdown.

Also if you have a lorry ensure it has a cab that can be fully tilted as this makes it far easier to work on in the event of a roadside breakdown.
