As our wonderful Bluebell (the B reg bedford) doesn't have a cut through cab, I would like to get one of the TV systems so that whoever is in the cab with me can keep an eye on them whilst in transit. They are usually pretty good but when you do hear the odd bang it would be nice to know what is going on back there!
Has anyone had one of these installed? Did you get it done professionally or DIY? Is the lack of a cigarette lighter in the cab going to mean power issues? Any recommendations? What sort of budget are we looking at?
I know some have reversing cameras on too but not particularly bothered about this. Would be an added bonus to be able to watch TV when on an overnight away trip though!! But would we need a TV licence?!?

You can get them on ebay for about £80.....no cigarette lighter shouldn't be an issue...you can always wire it into the fuse box, or even direct to the battery if you're feeling wreckless

Cool, thanks Rambo - I am a technical dunce, but OH and sister's OH quite useful so they might be able to do that I would think. Anything in particular I should look for / avoid?

I got a two camera one from e bay for about £150 and it was supposed to plug into the cigarette lighter thingy. When we had it fitted (£30 to fit) he wired it into the cab so the cigarette lighter is not vital.

It is great - it has two way sound and you can press a button and shout at them if you want. It is really reassuring and you realise how many of the bangs in the back are no big deal.

Our old Bedford was called Goldie by the way. When she went to Bedford heaven we put the box on a Leyland Daf and renamed it George but it played up so much (not starting etc) we had to go back to the original name so she is now Goldie again.

Sparklet LOL glad we aren't the only mad people around! Hope Bluebell has a few years left before going to bedford heaven to join Goldie #1.
As a matter of interest, how much did it cost to get the container put onto the daf, if you don't mind me asking??? Cos ultimately we will have to do something similar I expect as container much nicer than the chassis (sorry bluebell!)
Would also be handy to have a shouty one - my horse chews things for attention but if you tell him off he stops - can jsut imagine their shock if a ghostly voice came from nowhere!!!
Rambo, brilliant, thanks for link will go have a look.

Its worse than that - we all had our pictures taken with her on her last day (including my friends labrador who took care of modifying the seat covers with yellow lab hair)

Anyway back to business the main problems with lifting the box into a new chassis are a through cab (which you dont have) and skirts because the wheelholes have to match.

We didnt have skirts but did have a luton and through cab which we decided to remove to reduce the cost - it makes the repairs cheaper too because the garages hate any difficulty getting to the engine.

We got our usual repair man to do the job and which involved:

removing luton
boarding up the through
shortening the lorry (it was too long - apparently they are easy to shorten)
taking the curtain side thing off the new lorry
fitting the box
fitting quarter lights to the box

He didnt do the electrics to the box though.

The total cost was £1400 but he knocked £500 off the bill for the old Bedford. Befords are like gold-dust so either trade it in or find a breaker because they are worth quite a lot for spares. He didnt get the metal badge at the front and the number plate though - we kept them.

We always made sure we were out of earshot when we talked about 'new' lorry plans - we made the mistake of mentioning it once in Goldie and she was awkward to start for a few days (unusual for her).

Wow that isn't a bad price at all. I'd rather spend a bit extra and keep the luton tho - I think our container must have been on a chassis with a tilt cab at some point, as it has a hatch -thing at the front? Guess the theory being that this could allow a tilt cab to be used. Would also like a cut through next time, although maybe with CCTV we won't need one!
I am becoming very attached to bluebell, sadly my horse is not so keen as he is a little sh!t to load! But will go straight in if with another horse thank god, just means OH's mare has to come everywhere with us!
Know when I was on my driving course the instructor said a decent chassis about half the age of bluebell wouldn't actualy set us back that much, so we'll have to see....maybe we'll be able to afford it somewhere around 2010!!

Very true!! Going to have to stick with bluebell #1 for the forseeable future anyway, bless her and her rattles and bangs!
