Is it possible to change the petrol engine on a 3.5t box to a newer diesel engine?

does anyone know how much it might be roughly or is that kind of swap is a no no?

thank for your help

A lot depends on what it is. In theory it is possible, but it may well be easier just to change the chassis. It is not just a question of changing the engine, but the gearbox must also match the different RPM. It is more a question of cost than anything.Feel free to PM me if you need more info.

thanks mike,
its a 2L petrol engine in a 1987 bedford cf,

having found out from my other post, a chassis swap would be at least 800 plus the new chassis, would the engine swap be cheaper?

i used to have a petrol transit horsebox and im not really keen on it staying petrol if i buy this one, so just trying to figure out the cheapest way of ending up with a nice box!

Diesel CF s were great vehicles in their day. You are however going to struggle to find a good one now for an engine/gearbox. In theory other engines could be adapted, but it starts to get complicated and that means expensive. And at the end of the day you have a vehicle that is becoming hard to get parts for.Clara duck has given you some good info. The spacing of the chassis rails is the first prooblem, but it can be overcome. Cab height, yes it is easy to pack the rails to match a higher cab but it also affects the angle of the ramp.(usualy a problem with bigger lorries). The length of the bed is important but there is usualy a bit of leeway. The axle fouling a cross member is also a bloody nuisance. However this is still easier to deal with than the engine change option. I think you will be able to swap chassis ,easily for£800 , plus parts..
