hiya. just wondering if anyone has ANY idea what cost would be involved to convert a ford transit luton into a box? need to get some quotes but just thought id see if anyone had done similar.
looking at if i already had the vehicle and just needed the back converting.
i know its a long shot but any opinions welcome

Depends what you want & standard you want it.
A few years ago I had an iveco daily converted to a horsebox, cost excluding the chassis was about £8k inc VAT. It had good quality fittings (rubber ramp, glasonite partition & gates, lights, insulated roof etc), small living which was just a shell with saddle & bridle racks (though walls were carpeted & had laminate flooring & a bench seat). Cost also included re spray.

make sure the Ford Cargo's engine is seriously up to the job... i only say this cos i had one, and blew the engine up, going up a steep hill with only 1 horse on. i then paid far too much money to put a fully reconditioned engine in, and the same thing happened again. and no, i didn't forget to check the oil, water or anything. it wasn't really man enough for the job.

With Transits make sure you have the 3.5 ton chassis as a lot of them are only 2.9 ton, there is a plate on the door step showing axle weights, if its the 2.9 ton model you will be very restricted to how much you can carry. Also have the chassis checked as they tend to corrode badly, where the back wall of the cab meets the chassis, also make sure its the twin wheel model otherwise you will get stuck on wet showgrounds.
Also get a diesel, as the petrols are gutless wonders and need a fuel tanker following them.
