I am keen to buy a new 7.5t conversion. I don't have a big budget (absolute max is 25k) BUT I don't want anything flash. I just want somethimg that is safe for my horse, watertight and reasonably reliable. No need for fitted living, smeg fridges, agas, disco balls etc. Just a truck that my horse isnt going to fall through the floor of. Am starting to thing I am asking for too much though...anyone got any recommendations that won't involve me selling an organ??
 
You are best to get a chassis/cab that has had a new container built on it rather than a conversion of an existing container.
As from October 2014 when the 'whole vehicle approval test' was introduced all new horseboxes 7.5 tons and over are now required to have a certificate of compliance (COC) in order to be taxed with the DVLA. The certificate has 72 technical requirements covering everything from brakes to lights.
 
Crikey Peter, I did not know that. Thanks for the info, much appreciated! Does anyone have any recommendations for anyone in the leeds or york area that would do this without blowing my budget???
 
Possibly a bit over budget but a company worth looking at/talking to is AJ Horseboxes.
They do partial conversions which brings the price down if you could get the absolute minimum done and no living etc.

Thanks MuddyTB. I actually know Adam as he has done work for me on my existing box and his workmanship is superb but I fear my budget may not be sufficient to pay him. Will have a chat with him though.
 
I had 2 boxes running done by Ian Saynor of Highwood Horseboxes, one ten years after the other.

He is an engineer, and both boxes had no snagging, were solid and useable. He will part convert if you can pay for the horse bit now and living later, with or without a luton.

When I visited them both I rated him higher than Minster.

Thanks Red-1. Have been meaning to pm you as I saw an old thread where you had mentioned these people. I will give them a call next week. Did you find your boxes were watertight? Random qu I know but once you have been on the receiving end of one that springs leaks for fun it becomes a priority!

And dollymix, I had thought I had responded to say thanks for your post but randomly my response no longer seems to be showing, so thanks again!

The first was a tilt cab with a cut through, and was 100% watertight. He did tell me to replace the seal if I tilted the cab (only necessary for major repairs) but I had the box for several years and although I did tilt the cab a number of times I never did replace the seal. It did leak a bit on the join in the end, but not to the extent that I ever bothered to replace the seal. It was just a stick on foam, cheap and easy, but it really did not leak to any extent.

The second box was also a tilt cab, I did not have a cut through, and it never leaked.

They are perhaps not the poshest boxes when he builds down to a price, but still solid and smart. The horse compartment is VERY hardwearing, and the ramp a one person operation.
