Sorry but yet another question about this.
My box was professionally converted a few months ago. I love it but admit theres a couple of things I wasnt happy with but put it down to me being over cautious about things

Has anyone got a conversion with the original GRP??? sides, was it then lined with Aluminium before spraying or is it just 'as it was' from its former life.
Are they strong enough as my horse has booted mine whilst travelling and hasnt caused any damage but its made me think, how strong are they?
Im now worrying as usual

You should have some extra lining on the inside could be plywood , stock board both hard or eva matting(soft) ,grp is very strong but can split if a dertermined kicker gets to work!! just check if not you could fit something extra over the grp .hope this helps

Thanks for replying, the boxes Ive seen recently are lined on the outside with Ali, mine isnt

. Do you think its ok. It wasnt a cheap conversion and I feel a bit miffed now.

It should be fine

the idea of covering the outside with ali sheets is for 1 to make it look like a coach built ali box

or 2 to hide a knakerd or scruffy Grp box

so if yours looks nice dont worry its the lining inside thats important for strength

I am having a conversion done at the moment. I have had one on the sides replaced as it was damaged. It is though still being lined on the inside with stockboards I think. Can you not ring around for a second opinion.

Um you should have posted a new thread realy, but I would surgest that you should make the lorry /trailer seem like a nice place to be.. maybe by feeding him in there and petting him..for a few weeks. before taking him anywhere and then very carefully it will take a long time and he may never get over it .. sounds like the driver needs at least a good slap

I had a GRP box converted a few years ago, and was paranoid about horses being able to kick back through the sides, so got steel beams put vertically to about 4 feet and 2 feet apart, filled the spaces between with heavy duty polystyrene sheeting (to disperse any impact) and then covered the whole lot with stokboard (which is in fact chopped up black bin bags I think). It cut the internal width by about 4 inches, but as the box of 8ft wide it wasn't a problem, but I was absolutely confident that a horse couldn't kick through. The outside was left as GRP and then spray painted.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. Mine is lined with EVA matting which he went through after his one bratty kick so I took it back to horsebox man and asked for something better to line it with, I wanted stokboard. He said he doesnt use it anymore with it warping and so put another layer of EVA matting on top. These are bonded on, so god knows how I would get them off to replace with something else. I just want peace of mind and sometimes regret ever having it made by them as for what this is ending up costing me I could have probably had a nice 2nd hand coachbuilt.
I did ask what was behind the EVA matting and he said the GRP body! If I could get the matting off I'd get it half lined in Ali and put the mats back on top.

Thanks Supagran, Ive just had a look at mine to see if this could be done as I already have the horizontal steel frame inside which my partitions attach to. I havent enough room left between the eva matting and the strip of holed metal in the floor (what my partitions go into) to fit the stokboard.
If he hadnt put the 2nd layer on, I could have put boarding over the top.
Can this matting be removed if bonded on as if so I will get some ali put next to the GRP body then the matting on top.

Hi Iwould think it would come off give it a bit of a pull see if it moves I would think some will come of but lumps will be left on the GRP which you will need a sharp scraper to remove then you can fit some ali if you want, stock board is a pain used it on mine its very hard to fix it because it expands in hot weather and warps, screws shear off ,wont glue either!!and its heavy, maybe best to stick with the thicker EVA???

Thanks perfect11s.
I asked for ali when I took it back and then for the EVA matting to be stuck on top but he said the matting wouldnt stick to the Ali?? To be honest I'd sort of given up at this point as I just dont think he wanted to do it. Wouldnt mind but Ive not asked for anything for free, Ive paid for the extra matting etc..
We are totally useless when it comes to anything DIY so how would we attach the ali without going through the GRP body? Would even more srew holes weaken it in anyway and can you reccomend anyone rerasonable to do the work as I aint going back to the builder!
What would you do to it if if it was your box (please dont say scrap it!!!
