Hi there I am looking to buy a horsebox conversion (2 horses) and there seems to be two types around. One looks like a transit van and the other is more boxie and looks iore like the coach built ones. However they seem to be on the same chassie? basical the same vehicle. Can anyone tell me if one is better than the other or just give me some advice, would really be appreciated!! Any other info would be great
:)

If what you are looking at is a 3.5 tonne, then not 1 of them is suitable for 2 x horses, the max payload you will get is around 1200.
By the time you have 1 horse at around 500kg+, driver, tack, hay, water, friend & packed lunch you might have weight for a small pony in the 2nd partition space.
Apologies if I have read this wrongly tho :)

Edited to add, the transit is a lot higher on the suspension, so gives a more 'rolling' ride & is higher loading.
The preferred ones to have converted or built are Vauxhall Movano's and Renault Master's :)

Thanks, it was me probably didn't word it very well, yes you are correct it is a 3.5 tonne one. I would just be traveling one horse tho. I have a trailer at the mo and i am really nervous about towing, where we live we have very narrow roads and backing up can be a nightmare, thought this would be a better option. Would you say they are OK for one horse and which would be the best option, Many thanks:)

I have a 3.5t Renualt Master conversion which still looks like a van, I have several friends who have the Renault Masters which are more boxy and have been coach built. The main difference is that mine will only take horses up to 16hh as it is not as tall, the advantage however is that I have more payload as the extra back on the coach built ones takes up some of the weight. I have 1250kg (i have no living at all, just the horse bit converted) whereas the maximum the coachbuilt ones seem to have is around 1100kgs.

So i guess the main consideration is the height of horse you want to carry?

I have just traded in my transit horse box after 3 years because it was stalled for 2 horses 16.2 plus but the payload (the amount of weight you can legally carry to take the box to 3.5t) was about 900kg.

I have just had a vauxhall movano converted by equisport horseboxes it has a payload of 1300kg so will carry my fjord and 15hh cob legally with 2 persons and tack.

Mine does not have the luton type top on it I presume this is to keep the weight to a minimum so you are able to take 2 horses. It is plenty big enough inside to accommodate I would say a 16hh horse.

Oh thanks everyone really helpful. All I want to do is transport one 15.1 lady safely so sounds like either is ok. While am asking i have heard they don't travel well on wet grass anyone had any problems? Reason i ask is I do a few pleasure ride and often park on grassy fields. Thanks again!!

Mine is a V.Movano, properly coachbuilt by reputable builder & it has a payload of 1230kg.
Its got full luton (usefull for spare wheel & assorted gubbins) and is capable of taking 17.2hh, tho the largest I have travelled in it is 17hh to date :)
