Hi everyone, looking for some info on horseboxdealers in the midlands or north of England, does anyone have any advice either who is good or who to avoid. I'm looking for a small lorry between 5 and 7.5 tons, I don't want a small transit type, just a nice compact little lorry with decent partitions thats mechanically very sound.
any info would be great, pm me if you prefer. thanks

Dont know anything about that area, but in general, you find the best ones by word of mouth. Friend bought super lorry, 3 horse, 4 pony, with living, just by taking her horse schooling x-country. She loves it, and you dont have to have any added extras on your lisence to drive it, so extra good!! Keep an ear out at shows/lessons etc.. Hopefully you may find something there!!

Im not in your area either so can't help you there but if you want something bigger than a transit and have passed your test after 1997 you will need to take another test.

Having learnt the hardway myself (scrapped 6k lorry after 2 years:()
  • Avoid glassonite (GRP) - it rots from the inside out, the first signs are little star like cracks in the external face.
  • Make sure its got a tilt cab as if it doesn't anyone who will work on them will charge you for the privilege and what could have been a minor job becomes a major one.

I would decide how much you want to spend, must haves , would likes and look on the H&H , horse deals and ebay web sites,
its very much a buyers market at the moment and there is alot of lorrys for sale so there are deals to be had, get anything you are thinking of buying checked over before paying there is a also a lot of painted up wrecks about and ditto on the non tilt cab if you are going 7.5 ton and 7.5 toners are the best value by far IMHO....

thanks guys, I can drive up to 7.5 ok.

Interesting comments re tilt cab - the local excellent commercial garage are saying must be a tilt cab but dealers of course say it doesn't matter!

Not many lorries around in scotland so will need to go south!! I thought Midlands and North England would have more about, don't mind travelling but not righfurther tht down south.

It makes my blood boil these conman builders and dealers saying it dosent matter no it doesent to them once its sold.... But to the owner !!!!! ???a 5 minute
job to say tighten a belt takes hours and the worse thing is some service items can.. get skipped because its a major job , sometimes its ok the thing runs for years but other times the engine fails and its more than the lorry is worth to have another fitted... listen to the garrage more of your money will stay with you and they will look after you .... good luck with your hunt:D
