Hi everyone!

Hope you all had good Christmasses!

I have a quick question for you. I got a new horsebox for Christmas however it has no external tie ups. I've found a supplier so that's not a problem, but are they easy to fit yourself rather than pay a company to do it for you?

I paid my local horsebox builder because I wanted it to look professional and doubted my ability to not somehow break things :lol: ... It cost maybe £20 of his time, cash ;)

My dad is pretty nifty with building stuff - built a professional looking mounting block and a shelving unit so he would be doing it I think as I would most likely make a mess of it!
 
The actual drilling is dead easy. But you need to be sure you're fixing to something solid, rather than just the wall. Hard to say without knowing the construction of yr wagon.
 
No external tie rings because it is pretty dangerous (and in fact not allowed in some countries)to tie horses to the outside of a lorry. I have actually seen a horse pull back from a lorry taking some of the body work with it, a brave soul in the horsebox park managed to catch the galloping horse just before it went through an entrance to a showground crowded with public. The person who caught it was ambulanced to hospital with a split liver.

Errrr ...... you tie something that breaks to the tie ring?

There must be tens of thousands of horses tied to the outside of lorries and trailers every weekend day in the summer in this country!

I'd love to know what countries have made it illegal to tie a horse to the side of a vehicle.




OP, the OH did one for me, it was easy, but as someone said, it has to be to a strong piece of wall.
 
Quite keen to know where too as we stall to the box over a fair chunk of Europe, not been as the driver myself for a few years but planning a couple of trips next year?

I like having 2 heights of rings, to the frame work, with twine. I often use hay nets away from home to tie up where I just don’t at home!

And then there’s a loose horse galloping round the show ground, fabulous. I’ve worked as a show jumping groom & still do at some big shows & everything is done on the lorry for this reason, sometimes with 6 or 7 horses on board, at show jumping shows you never see horses tied up outside & I don’t with my own horse either, it’s dangerous!

And I know more than one person who has been seriously hurt when tacking up a horse in the confined space of a lorry and it kicked off.

There are dangers in both situations. Horses must be tied to vehicles on a million occasions a year in this country. How many of them result in any damage to a horse or a person? I've been doing it for forty years and never had, or seen, any damage. Seen plenty of loose horses (mostly from a handling error or a rider falling) and they are just caught by people on the show ground.

An awful lot of shows/venues forbid the tying up of horses to the outside of boxes now, seen it more times than not in the last few years

Op - Def get experienced help with the tie ring, my pony once went on a gallivant of a showground with a tie ring attached - I'd fitted the tie ring myself ...

At the venues I go to, that's not for safety, it's because they can't get people to clear their mess up after themselves.

I'm not surprised! Mind you so many people muck out their lorry straight on to the car park - always some that ruin it for the rest! It's very rare to see a pony tied to a box at a showing show, its usually not allowed - perhaps we are the worst offenders!

The big venues generally have muck heaps and a barrow you can borrow too! Unless very local and one my good travellers I do muck out, but onto the heap!
 
I will add at this point that my **** of a pony has removed 2 internal tie rings that were just on the body of the lorry, ie, he pulled back & popped them off. If you expect your tie to be secure, it needs to be to a strong fixing point. Not just the wall.

I need the ties unfortunately as my mare is nervous in the box so needs to be able to be tied outside when at a show. The small local ones we are doing at the moment have no areas to tie your horses so it’s box or nothing. Of course she won’t be tied directly to the ring - standard heath and safety practice!

Off to hunt someone to fix them on for me now...
