Hi all! Has anyone had a floor replaced in a 7.5t? I’m looking for an estimate on the amount of time it should take…: I’ve had wildly differing quotes!
Company A - experienced coach builders, no negative reviews I can find online. He said roughly 16-20 hours
Company B - also well known Horsebox specialists - 40 hours?!
Company C - not sure (they’ve never done one before) but just the materials alone would be 5x what A and B quoted me ….?!?
Company D - Horsebox specialist, but told me that aluminium alone isn’t possible as it’s not safe and only option is buffalo with chequerplate over the top. Didn’t quote hours but based on their price vs one of the others taking out materials I think he would also be looking at it taking around 16 hours.

Has anyone done one or had one done? It’s a 7.5, current floor is buffalo board but not sealed properly, crossmembers all fine underneath. Will need one added at front - all companies aware of that.

Yes! I have had the floor and ramp timbers replaced on my 7.5 Ton horsebox.

It had a 12 Foot container on it with no living so it was just a case of removing the partitions.

We weighed down the ramp so that when we removed the timbers from it could not snap shut like a Mouse trap!

We then removed the rubber and wooden floor of the horsebox completely and then removed all the rust from the cross members and welded them where necessary before rust proofing them.
The wooden floor was replaced with board on top and then rubber matting.

We did the same to the ramp.

It took two of us two full days to do.

My advice to you is is get it done by a reputable company who if they spot any issues reports back to you to alert you of them.

The issue with aluminium is that it can corrode and it is essential to place a membrane or insulation between it and any steel cross members or side supports to avoid any galvanic action which could cause it to rot.

Thanks Peter! That sounds like the 16-20 hours estimate is closer to the mark then. My living floor was redone last year with buffalo board so it’s just the horse area - therefore like you just partitions to come out. My ramp is fine fortunately. And yes will definitely be using a reputable company.

I had the floor replaced on my old truck before I sold it. Cost £900 +vat . That was before Covid / price increases for steel . So maybe more like £1500 now ?

My partner and I replaced the floor and ramp in my 7.5 ton horsebox. I was labourer and supervisor while he did the actual work! The floor was just the horse area (not living) and the ramp was the boards, matting and runners but not the struts. All wood. Rubber flooring was re-used. Total cost of materials, without labour was just under £600 and it was all done in a day.

Thank you all. Sounds like the chap telling me it is 40+ hours of work and almost £4000 as a result is having me on! I’ll go with the one my instinct is telling me is the best combo of competent/not trying to rip me off.
