I decided to sell my horsebox before Christmas and although I got a few calls, the response seemed to be that it was a bit plain and drab looking. Its a 2001 so not overly old, its as new as only used about 15 times but is a pretty boring grey colour. So Ive decided to get a stripe or something put on it, not too much as I dont want to put people off by going over the top and then advertise it again. Ive just had a quote for £360 +vat for pretty much one stripe all the way round and redoing the HORSES on the front. Its a 7.5t, 23 ft long. I was quoted £230 for much more than one stripe from another company over a year ago but this isnt local and a bit of a pain to get too. We didnt get it done then because other things cropped up and the wagon went to the back of the list.
Do you think £360 + vat is expensive?

Blo@dy forum, hate it! Can't even seem to post a simple reply, so hope this works!
There are cheaper ways to brighten up your box that expesive quotes such as the one you had, if you are careful enough to be able to do it yourself.
See this link:

Personally I wouldn't worry what a box looked like as long as it was safe and sound. You could always offer to knock a few pounds off if someone was interested, saying that way they can get the stripe/decal they would like.

Yes!!!!

Why don't you do it yourself?? It depends on how sophisticated, but there are people on ebay selling stripe from 99p per metre, there are also people advertising decals from about £30 for 5' long.

Plan what you want then buy and if you aren't confident enough to fit, find a smart repairer locally who will put it on for you - not sure where you are but our chappie is really reasonable (i work in the motortrade)

Its got to work out cheaper and if you are worried about fitting it yourself, as long as you have enough, take your time, measure properly, use masking tape or drywipe marker, then it is possible and even if you buy double the stripe/decal I'm sure its possible to do it significantly cheaper!!

Thanks for replying.
Just realised it doesnt say where we are from anymore or mine doesnt lol. God I hate this new lay out, bring back the old one :(. Im North Manchester.
It was an expensive wagon so I am worried about doing it myself incase I totally mess it up. I reckon Im going to lose a lot of money selling anyway as theyve come down so much in price so I dont want to 'cheapen' it by doing a botch job myself.
Ive looked at Pegasus and they are about £230 on there so Im scared for that money I may lose the lot if I mess it up.
Ive tried to haggle a bit and am waiting for him to come back to me. What makes me laugh is they are the 2nd company Ive tried to get a quote of recently and the first one never got back to me even though I rang them a few times and this one took 3 calls to get a price. Its like they dont want the work.

Don't be worried about messing it up, all decals come off with the aid of a hairdryer - its how we remove signwriting, as long as your paint is ok in the first place it won't be a problem.

These companies really do my head in, as do professional signwriters, they cost a fortune for bits of sticky cut out.

The bits that go wrong are:
not level
air bubbles (again the hairdryer can help with the aid of a squeegee or sponge to work out the bubbles)
sticky breaks, a bit of patience helps though even if it does, cut off and work on sharp edges.

To be fair if your lorry is worth over 30k then get it done professionally, if not then give it a go!! Horsey people aren't usually worried about a wonky stripe, they are more worried about their nedddy - no offence meant!!

Thanks :D
I thought that when I advertised it, I had it built with the emphasis put on the horse area. Inside it really is nice, basic day living but nice and the horse area is very safe and substantial. The outside lets it down. My fault I picked the colour and wouldnt pay another £1500 for metallic paint as I was already over my budget. Sadly I think lots of people like the posh paint job, fancy graphics etc etc. I feel when listed for sale mine gets overlooked or more over shadowed by the lovely bright ones next to it. One caller said she though it looked like a prison van!!:eek::D

Hate to say this but another 1500 for metallic paint would have been lifting your leg!!! We can get a respray down here including metallic for 2.5k, trade or not!!

We've found that smart, presentable (not always metallic) sells, mostly down to description and some tasteful photos, yes decals sometimes help break it up but its always down to price (whether selling cars, horseboxes or vans, its always the same, right price right customer) and a shiny item with a lovely photo always attracts them in!!

Don't give up and certainly don't pay for expensive graphics!!! (on old bedford sold well with the graphics saying horses on the front- no interest before we put it on!!)

I know, nearly died when they wanted that extra for metallic hence my flat grey colour :). Ive learnt a lot having a box converted by a professional company lol. Mainly I wont do it again :D. To be fair it is a really good wagon and someone if they can get passed the colour will get a great box at a fraction of the price new. I probably paid too much but when I was looking I could get nothing decent for my money, hence going down this route. Now they seem so much cheaper. Ive decided rather than it sit doing nothing and costing me money to try and sell. The graphic (sticker) option was hopefully a way to make it more attractive. Anyone whos seen it thinks its 'missing something' and needs something to break it up a bit.

Hi Louby,

How are you? So unlike you to post about horse transport! :p

Just a thought - now that we approaching the warmer weather & people are out & about again, would it not be worth just advertising again without spending anything on it? I should think more will be looking to buy now than were before Christmas!

x.

Natalie H ... Now whatever makes you think that lol:D:D:D
Bitlessbill ... Thanks for that, will go and have a look now :)
