Is the internal height of a horsebox really that much more to that of a trailer?

My part bred giraffe is 17hh (a week off being a 3yr old) and I have a trailer up to 17.2 but when he puts his head up he squashes his ears flat against the ceiling. Now luckily he travels nicely but I have contemplated a wagon as a just in case.

Is the height so much more significant in a wagon, whether it be a 4.5 or 7.5t box? I am dismissing a 3.5t as I need payload for partner and little person and ideally minimal living so they can hide in there in poor weather!

Move on from topic of licenses - it doesn’t need covering for the purpose of the question.

For a horse of that size, you need headroom of 8' minimum. I have had a 3.5, 7.5 and 12.5 tonne box, all of which had that. I believe you can get trailers with the same, but it is years since I had a trailer.

Stall width and length is another consideration. Bigger wagons are 8ft wide, but that is a bit squeezy for one that size, you would need a stall angle of around 30 degrees, and a width of 3'3, which will look smaller because of the angle.

I’d like the smaller 4.5t as my stables are not easy to get to and would take ages to nudge and squeeze a 7.5t through unless it was a compact one.

I genuinely wasn’t aware that 3.5 tonners had such headroom but need payload so written off as option! Horse is short coupled - in a 6’6” and doesn’t look to get too much longer so length isn’t an issue; it’s the part bred giraffe problem!
