hello, has anyone found companies that will do excess insurance for horsebox hire? I'm hiring from MyRentalHorsebox.com for the first time this weekend and the excess is £1000 so would like to get that covered, but can only find insurance for cars...

BUMP - sorry, I'm really stuck! Have phoned a few companies that do van/motorhome hire and none of them can suggest anything.

no, I tried last year and couldn't find any-which is why myrentalhorsebox probably doesn't offer it and why we didn't use them in the end, sorry. In the end a friend kindly lent us her box and we paid for extra drivers on her insurance.

I think it might be covered by the policy that comes with an American Express platinum card. I read something somewhere on another forum about the cover applying to a trailer he was towing with a hire car.

I don't have the documents to hand just now and the nearest I can find on the website is this "When renting a car abroad, there is no need to accept the theft, damage and liability additional/optional car rental insurance, this is covered up to £50,000 under your Platinum Insurance benefits."

Bah. Thanks anyway. I've phoned quite a few companies, including ones that offer specialist vehicle insurance and nothing!! unbelievable really :-s. Unfortunately RMH is my only option for this weekend (big competition and need box for whole weekend, at last minute can't use usual box, none of my friends have 3.5ts and local horsebox hire proper companies booked) but not sure I will do it again for this reason.

Seems crazy that there isn't a company who will do proper specialist insurance for any type of vehicle though, what about wedding cars and that sort of thing?! Crazy,

Anyway. If all else fails he can go in the car. My colleague just sent me this : http://www.carsite.co.uk/gallery/videos/id/3953-how-to-fit-a-horse-into-a-hyunday-accent :-o

Just putting some more info here in case anyone else has this problem in future:

I've spent all morning phoning all sorts of companies, including those who offer excess insurance on vans, 'specialist vehicles', etc, and also the usual horsebox insurers. It was an outright no from every single one, except Anthony Evans who were SO helpful.
They went to the effort of phoning some insurance providers for me, who said that the problem is that the name of the owner would need to be on the excess insurance policy, so it wouldn't work for me as a hirer.

I'm not sure how it works for car hire excess insurance, but obviously the horsebox insurance world isn't set up to deal with this, whihc is quite surprising! I've dropped MRH an email to suggest they find some way of overcoming this, as it will certainly put me off hiring wiht them again and sounds like others have found it a similar problem. Until then I will just have to drive very carefully and keep my fingers crossed, but I am a bit concerned about it (even just in terms of things like the owner being unreasonable). :-s
