I was horrified to find, when I came to change companies that the insurance company that I am with does not give a no claims bonus - so all the time I have been with them no bonus has been accruing. Now the new company has doubled its price because I had less bonus than I thought. Absolutely nothing in the papers tells me this is the case but the company tells me it is common practise with horseboxes. Watch out that it doesn't happen to you!

yes i thought that this year when i changed from drayton (equity 4 star) to NFU i had been with drayton 4 years and they wanted 800 for my insurance this year (i am 23 and drive a 16t HGV) but Nfu were cheaper at £336 with breakdown cover, now drayton then informed me when i leaft them that they did not issue no claims bonus, so i asked them to put into a written letter stating that in the time i had been with them that i hadnt claimed and i handed that letter to the Nfu and that was fine accepted it like a certificate of no claims! might be worth you asking the same! :D:D:D

Interestingly I was with Drayton too. I cannpot believe they get away without telling you this in the first place. I have asked for a letter but NFU have referred te matter to underwriters to see if they will accept that. I have also complained to the FSO.

I thought it was because you can only build up No claims bonuses on one vehicle? So for example, I have a car and a motorbike (and relevant licences) but I can only build up NCB on my car or my motorbike despite them being 2 different vehicles and so you are not allowed to transfer the NCB between them anyway (for example if I sold my car I could not put my NCB on my motorbike). This will also become the case when I pass my C licence I wont be building up NCB on the horsebox either. Its the insurance companies finding new ways to rip you off but as you will either have a car licence entitling you to drive a 7.5ton or a C/C1 additional licence (which requires a car licence to take) I would assume they are thinking you will not be driving a 7.5ton as your daily vehicle and so will be building up NCB on a car unless you ask them otherwise. They are just trying to find ways to make insurance cost more! agree with above poster; it is your right to ask for a letter from your insurance company stating you havent claimed for so many years and showing this to your proposed new company in the hope they will give you a discount for not claiming without any registered NCBs. insurance is a minefield  still for me things can only get better as insurance gets a tiny bit easier every year nearer to 21 I edge, I am so doomed if I have a crash before I get to 21 tho!

No. Each vehicle you have insured under its own policy should accrue no claims bonus, where it is given. I currently have four vehicles insured, three are on max no claims but the most recent, my Landy, has only two years no claims as that is the length of time I've been running the fourth policy. NCB is not transferrable to add two lots together but when you change vehicles you can use the NCB from the old vehicle.

For the OP the no claims bonus is a discount given by the company you are insured with as a sort of reward for having made no claims, some companies, as you have found, don't do this however on transferring to a different company in order to get your no claims bonus from the new company you have to prove you have had however many years claim free driving. This is also the case when you have had a company car, when you first have to insure your own car you can get a letter from the HR Department, endorsed by the insurance company which will prove your years of accident free driving such that you can then get a discount from the new insurers.
