I just received a quote for my horsebox insurance £ 504 which seems huge when I hardly use it. I have been with SEIB for years but seeing if there is a better alternative. Any ideas or recommendations??

I had a 7.5 ton horsebox for many years & was insured through Anthony D Evans who are based in Coventry. I also arranged recovery through them as well. I sold my lorry a few months ago so cannot say how much it would have cost me this year. I only had to use their services once a few years ago & that was the recovery aspect when I had a battery issue. Give hem a call (enquiries@anthonydevans.co.uk) you may get a surprise & save money.

Is it a 3.5 or 7.5 or more? I always ring round the main ones such as SEIB, A Evans, KBIS etc. and this year equesure were the best. They were also offering a competitive price on breakdown with Equine Rescue Services.

Ah ok, mine's a 3.5t so unfortunately not a direct comparison. I managed to get insurance and breakdown for £334 from equesure but I don't know how that compares to a 7.5t.

I think a lot of insurance has unfortunately gone up. My car went up by a third :(

My American car is |£ 400, went up £ 100 with Adrian Flux so contacted SEIB sister company Lansdowne and they quote me £ 289 something so went back to SEIB and they dropped it down even lower. RESUlT. Might try that again with box.

I also had a high quote from SEIB this year and have gone with a policy from a broker called A plan insurance which was much better. PM if interested and I can give you contacts for the person I dealt with who was great.

Mine is with A Plan, I cant remember how much it was but they were the cheapest for my 3.5t

If you have your breakdown with A plan too, double check who they're offering it with and that it definitely covers you as a horsebox and with horses. I had policies with them previously and their breakdown provider changed half way through my last policy (without me being notified) so I wasn't covered. When I went to renew their policy wasn't with ERS or a horsebox rescue I recognised so might be worth double checking.

I'd used them with no problems for a couple of years but completely lost faith in them after finding out about the breakdown cover being wrong.

Thanks- I quizzed the rep very thoroughly about their breakdown cover as I have a couple of difficult travellers and need to be able to ask for a box rather than a trailer for recovery and full height stallion partitions. She was honest in that theirs didn’t cover that so I went with equine rescue for breakdown instead.

Interestingly equine rescue had an option for covering up to £500 worth of parts at the roadside to get you going for an additional £100….which having a 20 yr old box didn’t seem like a bad proposition and includes home start whereas some don’t.

Had a horrendous experience with A plan insurance and their breakdown...Silver Knight. Broke down and they tried to tell me the policy didn't exist...lots of stress and had to pay up front £320 for them to collect my lorry or they refused to come despite me having the policy in my hand. 8hrs later of me being on my own waiting in the middle of knowhere...they finally towed the lorry. Thank god we were not far from the yard so I could take the horse back to the yard or god knows what would have happened.

They admitted they had made a mistake and offered £50 compensation but I cannot explain what a horrible and stressful experience the whole thing was. If you've got breakdown with them I'd cancel and go with Anthony Evans!
