My new horsbox is a blank canvas for the living and am planning on getting someone to fit the cupboards/units and do the rest myself - with help from a handyman mate!

Anyway, Just wondered why are livings carpeted on the walls? (As am planning to do this myself!)

Any any tips/hints to keep the costs down.

Soundproofing as well. Although we used a sort of vinyl stuff on our old lorry and it looked really good and light and washed off brilliantly.

I have just done the living in my lorry which was a blank space. Most of the things i bought were from ebay, e.g. sink, tap, cooker, curtains etc. It works out much cheaper.

Carpet is put on the walls for insulation, both for sound & warmth. You'll probably find that it stop the potential condensation problem aswell.

Tp save money have a look in 'Bargain Pages' etc for units, you may find that someone is selling ex display units which will be alot cheaper. Additionally try not to go for solid oak doors etc....they look good but the extra weight it adds to the build is quite high, Yoiu need to always be aware of weight.

Good Luck

To stop condensation put a layer of the white polysterne stuff between the outer roof and whatever you line the ceiling with. Works very well. Otherwise you will wake up with water dripping on you.

I had a blank canvas and fitted 2 saddle racks, 2 bridle racks, a fire extinguisher, mirror, a human 1st aid kit, an equine 1st aid kit, a poo scoop, tie up points for water and bucket and a pine trunk which serves as storage, seat and step to the space above the cab. I also installed lighting for the whole living and horse compartment.

Basically, its "Pimp my ride" on the Green Goddess (my lorry).

Heres the lorry that we fixed up, we completley gutted it and started from new. We Spent about £3.5k on it.

Tips are put a light switch up in the luton so you don't have to get out of bed to turn it off, If I was doing it again I would put the tack locker underneath the sofa (accessed from the outside). The white board on the ceiling and in the horse area is really good stuff about £14 a sheet.

Since the photos were taken the rubber flooring in the horse area has been finished. The white marks on the outside of the lorry was newspaper.

Bet that will be lovely by the time you have finished with it! I know a very good guy near us, who is an upholsterer/carpet fitter and doesn't charge the earth. He carpets our boats with really weird angles etc, he would do a good job on this. He also could do your seats etc. Let me know if you want his number!

Think about adding in child locks to the cupboards - not to keep kids out, but to stop the doors opening when you go round corners and dumping the contents on the floor!! (from experience, you don't have to be going that fast for it to happen!) The kind of thing I'm thinking of is a latch that goes inside the cupboard, it allows the door to be opened enough to stick you hand in to unlatch the door, but not enough for everything to come tumbling out!

Will get those caravan shutter things for the cupboards, where you have to push the button in to open the cupboard!!
