Horsebox opinions please.

My dad has decided that he needs 2 horseboxes.
Bad bit is hes decided I should buy the second one!
What do you think of this box for £3000?
Its an E reg Renault, and has done 15,000 miles on a new engine. The bloke whos buying it for me drove it justa few months ago from Tipperary - Chepstow - Bangor - Tipperary with no problems.
That is a major downside, is in Paddyland so cant test it first.
Will be delivered complete with 2 horses inside (you think im joking!).
My mum thinks id be better off spending £5000 on something a bit tidier, but looking around I dont think I can get a lot more (if anything) for that money.
What dya think?

Looks ok to me. Whats the biggest you can fit in there-headroom wise?

Just a shame you can't check the engine e.t.c over but if it did the jouney mentioned above ok then can't see too much being wrong with it.
 
Looks like a potential heap of junk to me.

However, I assume you mean it is 3K incl. 2 horses?

If so these boxes are actually quite desirable and if when you get it home it is going to need lots of money spending on it I reckon you should be able to flog it on ebay and not loose to much.
 
It is a freind of mine that has been driving it, so not too worried I am being done. I might just take it down to garage when he gets here if I decide to go ahead.
Think you can fit preety much anything in there. Not really an issue, most of ours are under 16.2hh and the 17.2hh used to fit in our other lorry no probs.
 
Knowing how long it took KatB to find her transport I would say buy it especially if the two horses are thrown in for the price! If it is taxed and tested for minimum of six months would not think you will go far wrong.
 
Do not touch the old Renault Masters!!!!
They are absolute piles of junk, rotting rust heaps that will cost you £1000's a year to keep together!
Yr better off spending your money on one of the old VW LT35 or VWLT50 which are also around 3.5ton and just as cheap, if not cheaper. Even the very oldest of VWs are in good condtion, super to drive and easy and cheap to maintain...

Interesting DotD, I've just sold my old Renault Master, very similar to the one above, had it 5 years and didn't have one single problem! (It was an R reg, but old shape) Yet I've heard some horror stories involving old VWLT35's.

As for 3.5 tons, all I'd say is be very careful you're not over the gross laden with 2 horses and gear in.
 
Ooh really?! That is interesting about the older VW's ! What sort of things ?
As for R reg- I would not consider old- all the ones Ive encountered with disastarous problems have been L reg or older...
At the end of the day I think it is luck of the draw with wether you get a good or bad lorry no matter what the age, but Renaults do seem to constantly be problematic.
 
Saying that, I did have one indicator with a loose connection that was a bit recurring!

The VW problems I've encountered, and these may have been subjuct to the chinese whispers effect, are related to; massive engine failure, poor suspension and a lack of stability around corners; to the point one was apparently turned over..

However, I have never owned one nor seen any evidence of said problems, so I could be spouting a load of drivel..

I would be very careful of the weights side of this, as many, although they can accomodate two big horses, are well over the weight limit with them.
