Horsebox payload , is this possible?

I've just enquired about the payload of a 3.5 box to Be told that it's almost 2 tonnes.....is this possible?

Someone on here will be far more knowledgeable than me but I wonder if they mean it's 1.5t payload (3.5t minus 2t weight). Although I get a bit confused with the exact terms!

I have a 3.9t that is just under 1.4t payload as very basic kit on it and that was about as good as I could find on the market a few years back.

Only way to be sure if to get it to a weighbridge and check it properly. The guy I bought mine off did that for me prior to purchase so I had that comfort as I knew I was taking one chunkier horse as well as my littler one. And I know I need to be v careful of weight even having had it updated to take .4t more! The weight adds up VERY easily once you count tack, people, hay, water and fuel.

Yep, me too, given that I am still shy of that with the extra .4t ! What make is it btw? I did have a 7.5t that was stainless steel and fairly light unladen, although used to sound like thunder when the wind went through it !!

Look at it another way, if it is legal, would you want to drive it stability wise??

I mean, it might be strong like aircraft are light and strong....but they dont half flex and bend to do it.....

Personally unless in the emissions zone, I prefer to pass test and drive something that the horses feel is solid and stable and are happy travelling in ie 7.5T or go for a trailer, which can be lightish but still strong as it hasnt got to lug engine, batteries etc around.

Sorry, a 2t payload on a 3.5t vehicle is not likely. The chassis alone will come in at over 1.5t and that is without the box.

This has got me thinking - -so to work out much you can carry you take the empty lorry to weighbridge and then you know how much more you put on? I have a 4.5 ton lorry - only ever had my horse on so havent worried about weight yet.

Yes. You know your lorry is 4.5t. Weigh in on a weighbridge and what is left over is your legal payload. Give or take a few kgs......

Renault master chassis is 1800kg before body work !!go figure as they say!!!! the all tin master vans (normal tradesmans type) will carry 1500kg just !!!

Thanks everyone, it's amazing the adverts I see for small boxes tha can carry "two horses" but then people don't know what the payload is.

I bought a 3.5t lorry before I knew much about all this. It was an ex racing box, and was sold as able to carry 2 horses. I got pulled over in it with 2 of my smallest on board, and we were overweight, not by much, but still over. Needless to say when it had problems we got rid, and bought a 7.5t lorry which only my then partner could drive!
I think unless you have small ponies, and a very light box, 2 in a 3.5t box is pushing it. (mine are arabs, so not exactly big, neither weigh more than 450kg if anywhere near that)
