Hi

Does anyone know how much the basic plating for a horsebox costs at the moment? ie, assuming nothing is wrong with it.

Also, presumabley we need a mechanic to take the box to the test centre, so if it need anything it can be done there and then?

If so, can anyone recommend someone in Epping or the West Essex area?

thanks

I think it's about £40.

I took mine to Purfleet myself. I always found it best to go and see what it fails on then get a mechanic to fix it. More often than not the repairs are too big to do there and then.

Ours is being plated now, took it to a garage this year to get it checked first because last year we were back and forth .They have taken it today just hope its gone through, sorry don't remember cost ,hubby department

You can take it youself if you wish, all you do is book it in at HGV test centre. Normally a waiting list. We used to do this, OH checked over and then took in. I think its about £60 now for plating.

Its a MOT ( ap Plating is a one off to set it's weights for the plate that is put in it)
So ask to bok an MOT when you call, not a Plating

You can find a list of VOSA Inspetorate centres that do MOT;s for 7.5 tonnes on their website

Allow 4 -6 weeks to get a booking, but you might get one sooner f prepared to travle.
Youmay also firn large commercial garages where they have a VOSA MOT tester visit one or two days a week.

It's around £47 I think.
Take it yourself, it's perfectly possible, I've done ours 8 times now.
Ensure the underneath is power washed and reasonably clean, and the cab is too so they can check any fittings for belts.
They get in the cab, look at everything, then ask you to do your indicators, horn, washers etc.
They then attach a monitor to your exhaust for emissions and you rev the engine.
They then disappear underneth tapping with small hammers for rust.
You drive forward, they check the lights for alignment.
Next is the pit inspection, they wiggle wheels etc about and check the whole underneath.
You drive onto a rolling road and they talk to you via a loudspeaker telling you to brake gently, hold it, brake hard etc. repeat with the back wheels on the road.
The last bit is a bit disconcerting as they bounce the box about testing the braking and your box rocks a lot!
Then it's over with. Oh they check your diesel cap too, I got allowed to buzz off and buy one to replace a worn cap one test.
I would take the box yourself and then return if they find anything wrong. I have ours serviced once a year and they tenbd to tell me what needs doing before a plate, but last year the tester chap warned me the was some welding needed under the wheel arches for it to pass this time..It's good to know what they require, as it saves a journey.
Take it yourself, the only horrible bit is driving over that enormous pit..something primeval tells me not to do it and sometimes I act helpless and a nearby man offers..
