I have a horsebox that hasn't been used in a long while, it starts and drives but has run out of MOT, need to decide whether to scrap or get an MOT on it and sell it

Haven't seen a box going for less than 3k recently, what's the minimum price you'd expect to pay for a 5t lorry with an MOT?

It's not suitable for sale at the moment so this isn't in any way an advert, just wanted an idea of what it might be worth

How old?
What condition?
Living?
How many horses?
Any work needed doing?

Can't really tell without these things!

Early 80s
2 horses, I got it for the headroom, Mike looks ridiculous shoehorned into a HB510
Fair condition, it needs work doing and I wouldn't sell without a new floor in the horse area
Sink, hob, oven, fridge, bed above cab in luton, cut through from cab to living, curtains, cushions, other stuff!
I have a quote for what needs doing, just need to decide if it's worth it

As long as it was clean/tidy throughout, paint work good and was safe, plus ran well with no major faults (I think we all accept aged 30 fuel gauges etc can stop working!) that between £3000 to £3500 would be a fair price.... You may get more depending on a build...coachbuilds are worth more than a bolt on box, or something that resembles a cattle truck!

I bought an M-reg Renault Master Mk1 that was uprated to 4,2t. Good paintwork, full service history, big horse area and reasonable space for tack etc. In excellent condidtion throughout. Paid over the oddds as it was such a nice box at nearly £7k but took me ages to find. I was the first to call, bought it on the spot and the laddy told me later when i went to collect it that she had more than 20 calls about it. Your box sounds like exactly the sort of thing I was looking for and is hard to find so if you tidy it up, I am sure you will find a buyer at more than £3k.

The value of the lorry as scrap won't be very much. Get a mechanic to check over your lorry & tell you what would be needed for mot & what it will cost you. Then when you have those details you can make an informed judgement on what to do.

At 30 years of age I would think sourcing parts for it would be a problem. It would also struggle to get through the modern emission tests. Would anyone want to buy such an aged vehicle.
