Hi

My lorry doesn't have seatbelts (1990 Daf) and I have never really worried about it but recently my mum has brought it up as a concern. I think she has a fair point as we do go on dual carriageways and get up to 55/60mph (on a good day!). OH and most of my friends with lorry's don't worry about it much but what do you guys think??

Anyone had them retro fitted? How much was it? Are there any harness type things that go over the seats that might help or does it need to be the full monty?!

um.. tea cakes and jam to all..

Any lorry reg before 2001 doesn't need them. I was told that the law had changed, and went on VOSA's website, and the wrong wording was on there making me assume that I had to get them fitted. I rang up about it, and the main advisor told me the site was misworded. So you def don't need them, and surely you don't go too fast with a horse up anyway?

Thanks, was more of a safety thing really. Don't go fast at all on back roads etc, but on dual carriageways I do go that bit faster, and was just a bit concerned ..

It will depend if the lorry is built with fixing points for the belts if it's too old to have them it will be difficult and probally expensive to retro fit them.

think you will find that the cab will have the fixing pionts there , so u can fit belts to, only one point to bear in mind tho , if you have an older truck and you fit them in there may be a possibility it will fail the mot iF there is corrosion in the cab within 300mm of the mounting points so to get round it remove them beforE it goes for mot , , have recently fitted some to an M reg merc 814 , for a customer , and also had a g reg roadrunner in for mot ( which had them put in by someone ekse) and had to remove them for mot to get it to pass ! and refitted after .

I had them fitted to my 1990/91 Daf. Can't remember the cost but it wasn't more than a couple of hundred and well worth it.

As to person who said you don't go fast with horses; no not particularly fast however if you had to slam on the brakes in an emergency at 50 mph, a passenger would hit the windscreen with significant force!

My 1991 DAF came with them fitted and it's pretty basic, no frills. Only thing I was told was if you do have them they have to be checked and passed as part of mot.
