My previous 3.5t Renault Master horsebox came with a tracker pre-installed. It was an older horsebox but it was nice to know the tracker was there if needed. Also made my insurance a tiny bit cheaper. I couldn't access the data. The service was a one-off payment to the company and if the box goes missing you call them and they can liaise with police to provide a location.

Now I am getting a shiny new horsebox (also 3.5t) I can see the technology has moved on quite a bit. Many services are now a monthly subscription but offer full police liaison including security backup and recovery assistance. They also now come with apps (which might be useful if I forgot where I've parked on the showground haha) ... Given the cost of a horsebox, I am tempted to invest in a decent tracker. Kit and installation looks to be about £200 + the monthly fee (or "duration of ownership payment" of nearly £400).

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations or reviews of horsebox trackers - brands, experiences, etc? Obviously, we all hope never to need it, but ....

Thanks!

Can Track is definitely the best currently on the market...battery powered which lasts for 5-7 years...sealed in a small resin case hence you can bury anywhere away from the usual locations... it doesn’t need power leads which is what the thieves look for to disable...
They also have their own team which go out and find it if it is stolen rather than waiting and relying on police...
Yearly subscription is reasonable and cheap enough that when the batteries run out you throw it away and buy a new one...

Most big construction firms are using them on their hyper expensive kit nowadays! Superb customer service...

We’ve also buried one underneath our Ifor Williams trailer...sits in all the mud and muck yet works perfectly!

Thanks, that's really helpful.
Will definitely have a look at that point.
Someone also recommended SmarTrak, but that runs off the battery in some capacity. That was useful insight!

I work in the industry where we fit these to all our machines and vehicles...Can Track is the only one we get back regularly because it’s so small that the thieves can’t find them...
the first thing the thief will do is look for aerial leads and additional power cables...this is their day job and they are very good at it...with this system there are no cables or leads to find hence their recovery figures are excellent...

Thanks! I get it more now. Sounds like it's worth the investment for the better product

Ooh thanks. I was told the monthly one just wasn’t worth it but will look in the can track one now! I’ve invested in a steering wheel, and big old wheel, lock as a visible deterrent.

Firstly I’m not associated with them in any way but we must have a thousand bits of kit protected by them now... I think there’s a one of cost and then a yearly subscription which effectively is for the built in sim technology and their website and response team...
It keeps it’s long battery life because it reports just once a day at a given time and pings its location and status...then it shuts down for the next 24 hours..when it wakes up each day it’s effectively checking if it needs to know anything..I.e.has it been stolen??

if it has been stolen when it wakes up it receives the message to start pinging it’s location but in a burst of data thus it’s incredibly hard for thieves to find it and scan for its presence..

The response team are all ex police officers and track it down wherever it is... they are hugely successful at recoveries! They do not charge for this as it is all built into the overall cost of it...

You can bury it in,on or under the vehicle and it’s small enough to slide in tiny places...

It is fit and forget technology..... you can log in to a website portal to see where it is but it’s not a fully active tracker and thus will only update every time it pings... you can adjust the number of time it pings but the more you set it to respond the more battery life you are using...hence most people only set it to transmit once a day...

good luck with it!

I have a can track too - can honesty say I love the peace of mind. I keep my box at the yard so I’m not always about and I get an email from it everyday telling me where it is. I’ve never (touch wood) needed to use it in anger but I get the impression the can track team would be right on it. It was really straightforward to install as well, no wires or anything, just stick it somewhere and forget about it

Any idea how much the Can Track costs to buy and is there a mo they charge? Been on their website but can see any relevant information.

www.shield-it.co.uk have some 2nd hand ones at £360 (£499 new) with 6:1/2 year battery life, subscription from can track is £150 +vat per year.

That's the only source I could find for a one off purchase for a private individual.

The purchases costs are roughly the same across brands + the subscription. I like that you can do a monthly subscription with some of the others, but that's my cashflow problem having spent everything on the box!

I’m am reliably informed standard direct prices are £249 as a one off cost for the unit and £149 I think for the subscription.... but it’s totally worth it for the piece of mind...I’ve even put one on our Ifor trailer...
