I have a 3.5 tonne lorry, but when my insurance came through it says it's a 4 tonne lorry, and they have insured it 4 years previous before i brought it so they had all details in system of it. Does this mean it can carry 4 tonnes? It's a ford transit long wheeled base.

No, it means they have probably put it in an insurance category for up to 4 ton lorries. If your lorry had a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 ton, it means your lorry with anything you choose to put in it, including humans, and fuel, cannot weigh more than 3.5 tons, should it be driven onto a weighbridge.

If you are in doubt, look at your log book, or search your lorry for the VIN plate, which is a square plate of metal with the Vehicle Identity Numbers stamped on it, it should record the laden (loaded) and unladen (empty) weight of the vehicle. Which should be valid, unless someone had updgraded your vehicle, which ought to be shown on your log book.
