i drive a 2 horse iveco complete with luxury living, approx 18-20ft, got pulled over on the way to tweseldown on sunday by vosa and the police to go on the old weigh bridge, 1 horse up (a tb) full water/diesel kit etc only had 1/2 a ton left to play with, fortunatley go most places on my own but that really doesn't leave much at all. based on that knowledge i would say there must be alot of people driving round not knowing they are overweight.
 
Have to admit we were very careful when we bought our last lorry to get a reasonably light weight one. When we went to Holland we were weighed before boarding and with loads of hayledge, one horse and plenty of gear was only 6.7T so we can happily take 2 fully laden but certainly not 3.
 
Ther are alot of overweight ones about - esp those with full living on a 7.5t chassis.

we got our old bedford weighed as a friend who is a haulage contractor reckoned being a downrated 10tonner with a steel framed body it would be 6.5t unladen

We were gobsmacked when it was 4.8 with a full tank of fuel

Good job really as we couldn't afford a new one!
 
Ours is a similar size to yours and we got weighed coming out of London, without a horse in it's 5 1/2 tons.
We didn't have the water tank on then so by the time you add two horses plus tack etc I bet we're only just within the limit.
Loads of the 7.5 ton lorries with big living and three horses must be way over, our living is only 5', some lorries appear to have enormous areas yet still be under the 7.5 catagory.
 
Once we had fitted out the living in the new lorry (7.5T) with the basics, we loaded up one horse, filled the water tanks, put full kit on and trundled to the weigh bridge on an adjoining farm - we were quite please as it weighed in at 6.3T, so we know that we can legally carry 2 horses and finish putting all the 'twiddly' bits in the living!

We are 'lucky' enough to have the VOSA weighbridge just a mile down the road - so chances of being pulled in are great!

We got pulled in with our old lorry (a 6t) coming back from a pony club rally- with 2 people and 2 horses on we were only 60kgs under!! (thank heavens we didnt have 3 people on!!)

So it pays to check (it cost us £6 to use the weighbridge - better than a fine if we were over!!)
 
Sent mine for plating with full tank of fuel and full water container (100ltr). Weighed in at 5.9t with perfect weight distibution front and rear axle so can safely carry my lad plus wifes 14.1. Much happier knowing I'm legal rather than just hoping. Mine is a big lorry though. 11'6" horse area and 10' living area.
 
We had ours weighed recently and with it fully loaded (without horse tho) so thats a full tank of deisel, full water tanks etc it was 6240

We only ever take 1 horse around anyways, and he weighs around 650kg so we have about 500 to play with aswell

However in the spring im having new 'light' partitions fitted, as ours are seriously heavy, and have been told this will reduce the weight a considerable amount.

We also carry a spare tyre on our lorry, which added to the weight quite a bit.
 
Luckily enough we have a lovely state of the art weighbridge at the yard. Mine wears 5.2t unladen with a full tank of fuel and water. I only ever carry one, so know i am well within my weight. Did make sure when i had living fitted out i used lightweight everything! Most things came from a place that manufactured stuff for caravans.

My old lorry was 7t unladen and was partioned for 4!! Slightly concerning i must say.

Was speaking to a horsebox manufacturer the other day and he said they were stopping producing 7.5t lorries and just doing HGV's as the litigation involved was horrendous and most 7.5t lorries aren't designed to have huge living, 3 horses and 4 people on board and be within the weight!

I have heard of other places doing this too and also there is a massive increase in female drivers going for their HGV or whatever it is called these days
