Horsebox

No, but I have thought about it, you know when you are loaded for a show, other then that there is nothing in there but half a bag of poo and a couple of swallows that insist on roosting in there.

Sadly due to all the recent thefts from lorries and trailers at shows I have decided to fit padlocks to the doors/ramp/windows of the trailer so we can lock it up when we leave it unattended (obviously not with the horse inside). At one time we could go to a show, leave all sorts of things in and around the trailer and it would still be there when we got back. A sad reflection on the times we live in. :(

Generally I leave the ramp unlocked as it's backed up to a fence, and I've usually got the engine running when I'm loading up so it's a pain when I've forgotten to unlock it. I have both the living and ramp unlocked for travelling in case of emergency. When I'm away from the box on a ride or competing then yes, everything is locked. I don't use padlocks, everything has a built in lock.

If your lorry has integral living someone could just put the ramp down and get straight into the cab. I lock mine as I don't want people in my living.

Don't keep anything in there worth pinching tbh, if we are on an organised event my tack is on the horse and I'm on the tack. I do PR rides with an Endurance club and we don't suffer petty theft like you do at affiliated events, it's a sad, sad world.

I have a lock, but also a bolt that's in the living to prevent people easily gaining access from the horse side. So, when we are at shows, I can leave the ramp down, and the living can't be accessed except by someone damaging the bolt. Hopefully, at a show, someone may happen to notice by the noise that something was wrong if that were to happen.

In the 10 years I've had my lorry I've never locked it, don't even own a paddlock for it! Its been left at hundreds of places from pleasure ride events to the beach. Never had anything taken, even spare headcollars/travel boots etc which I just leave in the back. I usually leave my back down at pleasure rides or if I box out to hack somewhere as usually some bright spark parks behind so you can't get the ramp down!

My living is behind a bolted door so unless you break the door down, you can't get in from the horse area.

No, but have side ramp & the box is parked side on to a stable wall at the yard.
It would be much easier to just bash in the grooms door if anyyone wanted to nick my spare old bridle, bucket of shavings, poo-picker, assorted lead ropes & emergency hat/gloves etc.
When out, no, never leave anything valuable in the horse sections tho.

We did originally padlock the ramp when parked and not using the box, but we were still concerned that at a show people could also easily access the living and cab. We have now fitted a pin code lock on the door between the horse area and living and don't keep anything in the horse are we would bother if it was stolen. However I have had Acavallo tail bandages stolen in the past few weeks, so sadly it seems now absolutely everything needs keeping out of sight.

Yes I certainly padlock mine. I can't understand why others don't. There are things in the living in my lorry of some value. This coupled that I also have a generator on board means I need to keep the lorry secure. I also have a crawl through so if someone gets into the living they can also get into the cab. :(

I only use mine as a day trip box. I don't leave anything in it when parked up and it's in a secure area. I tend to leave it unlocked when I'm out too, as once I'm on the horse then the most valuable stuff is with me, not much left behind really. I do lock the front van but only the central locking. It's as secure as any car I suppose so someone could pinch stuff from the back if they really wanted to. Fingers crossed not been an issue so far.

You can't get from the horse area to the living in mine, the door is locked on the other side, also I don't have a crawl through, both the cab and living are locked; but as others have said, not really anything worth having apart from tea/coffee and my kettle!

Just another thought, we have bought a wi-fi enabled camera to put up in the horse area so we can check on the horses using a mobile if we have one standing on board while another is competing. (previously we just had it linked to a screen on the cab for when travelling). Do you think adding a sign to point out the "CCTV" might put off some of the opportunists? Also chatted to someone recently that had their travel rugs nicked!

Yes, just one on the ramp catch when it's parked at the yard or unsupervised when I'm hacking away from home, not when I'm at shows. I just lock all other doors.
