I have been thinking of taking my HGV but could someone tell me what extra costs this will have, will the insurance and tax be more expensive.
My daughter who is 20 is also thinking of taking her HGV will the insurance be very expensive for her ?

I'm actually sat revising for my HGV theory test at the moment! It is very dull.
It's quite expensive to do - I'm going to do a 1 week course for about £1100 with a test at the end of it - but then I guessed I'd probably save that if I keep stealing my mums horsebox instead of paying to transport my horses around.
You're daughter might do better waiting until she's 21 - you can only do the c1 test (which is over 3.5T but up to 7.5T) under 21, but if she waits she could do the C test (anything over 3.5T). Initially I was a bit scared about doing the bigger test - but it gives you more flexibility for the future and it's the same price to get. I've also heard that 7.5T+ horseboxes are cheaper to buy because a lot of horsey people only have the c1 test.
Insurance on mum's lorry for any driver is about £600 a yr (probably not best deal - she's rubbish at shopping around!).

I think it depends how many horses and how much living you need , two horses and full living or 3 horses and day living a 7.5 ton non hgv is perfect, if you want to carry 3 or more and want massive living then HGV.. but remember you will need to use the tachograph every trip and understand drivers hour rules and repairs and service will cost more as will fuel 7.5 ton will do about 20+ ish 18tonner 10 ish mpg

really? I didn't know you had to have a tachograph for 7.5T+ if you were using it for personal use? Live and learn!
..oh yeah - I forgot pre-97 people can already drive up to 7.5t with they're normal licenses! lucky people!

Yes ... H&H has a petition going to try and reverse this rule, think there is a thread in the news forum, sadly I dont think there is much chance as its yet another law from our masters in the EU
