HORSEBOXES - LOW EMISION ZONE (LEZ)

Those who use horseboxes have until tomorrow to comment on the proposal by Transport for London to introduce in 2008 a low emisiion zone in London (within the M25) for diesel vehicles.

The proposal is intended to deter the older diesel vehicles (those built before 1999). A charge of £200 per day would be made for vehicles entering this area that do not comply and the system would be regulated by cameras. Fines would range from £500 - £1,000.

The concern is that this may be rolled out across Great Britain and have serious implications for horsebox owners who tend to use older vehicles.

It will cost at least £3000 to modify a pre 1999 vehicle although on many older vehicles it will not be possible to modify them.

my 1984 cargo cannot be modified

to be 'modifiable' your vehicle must have an electronic management/fuel pump system - so anything with an old 'mechanicqal' fuel pump cannot be modified.

the only other suggestion made by the ford lorry dealership was to restrict the fuel supply to the engine to reduce the emissions - however this would mean

a: my lorry would't travel faster than 10 mph
b: my lorry wouldn't be able to go up hill
c: it would probably cause engine damage

Doubt my 1979 Bedford could then! TBH is it costs 3k to modify I'd be more inclined to buy a newer chassis that is within limits and move the box over!

I don't believe voting on anything will make any difference - this government don't seem to mind who's toes they tread on once they've got a bee in their bonnet about things

so although I hate new laboure with a passion this isn't down to them

it's red ken and him alone

when I spoke to a mechanic about it - before I spoke to the dealership - they suggested a solution to the problem might be to take out a 'contract' on Ken L.

seems like not such a bad idea

so londoners - whenever R. K. L is up for re-election - vote the b'tard out - PLEEZE
