Horseboxes...ones to avoid??

I have an s reg iveco and it is superb, drives really well and is great mechanically. There seem to be loads of them as horseboxes, my last box was a leyland daf which was great but on comparisson I prefer the iveco as it is more powerful.
 
We changed our box last year for an Iveco and it is superb, does everything we require and service costs etc... are fine.

You just need to decide what you need from it and set a budget.

yeh ditto above,, when we were looking, mechanic just said dont touch the cargos..

to stop any confusion, just get a Mercedes ;) ;)
Ive got an 04 815 Atego under my box it has replaced the previous chassis which was a MAN 1996 its great drives nice and is good on diesel ... But
it is heavier than the MAN Ive lost about 400kg payload but the merc came at the right price but with hindsight I should have gone for a Daf LF my other lorry is a daf and its nicer to drive and lighter daf Parts are expensive however but about equal to Iveco....
next lorry will be a MAN or Daf ...

I have a W reg Iveco and never had a day's worry from it. It has sailed through every MOT, it always starts and it has never broken down...it does only have 37,000 kms on it which does make a huge difference to any truck in my opinion!

yikes if its genuine its not run in yet!!!! sounds like someone kept it as an ornament..
seriously though I would check the tyres because they wont be worn out with that mileage
but they may be getting perished due to age as happens to trailer tyres !!!!!!
 
IME avoid Mercedes lorries at all costs, you will never get anywhere. If the lorry started it would generally breakdown halfway (in the middle of a roundabout was a good one, whole roundabout had to be closed!)! Now have a renault midlum, it is brilliant, never had any problems with it. However it is '07 reg, and I have had it from new, so would be a bit pi$$ed off if it had broken down already!!!!!
 
Well I did lots of research into this

DAF LF - my choice, a girls lorry with the lightest cluth. Cheap parts
Iveco Eurocargo - Would be next choice, stiffer clutch, but cheap parts
Merc atego (newer models)- Air suspension is weridly cheap to run on these, and you do kind of get what you pay for, but parts more expensive.
Volvo - expensive don't work well at 7.5t
Renault - expensive parts, not really liked by mechanics

On saying all this I bought a DAF LF 150 Auto, which was a recycling lorry and had only done 22k miles, downside was auto was 60kg heavier due to upgraded box.

LOL I would write to DHL, stobarts, tesco etc and warn them Im sure they a blissfully unawere of how bad mercedes lorrys are and will take your advice and get rid of the thousands they run in there fleets!!!!!!!
 
just to add my two pennies worth

MAN are very nice, IMO i think their better that my first Iveco-7.5. But whatever you get you need a good service history with lots and lots of paper work. Plus what i did when i brought my newer truck i gave it to my garageman to give it a full service plus proper check over, £250 very spent.

you said gearbox was sticky????, as could be the clutch going and not cheap, £500+ to fix
 
not at all sticky.
just very different place gears click in compared to mums car.
they had clutch done a few months ago :D

our mechanic is vetting it this week ;)
