Sorry if this has been done 1001 times before..

I passed my driving test 3 years ago & i want to start driving the horsebox now. I'm sure i can drive up to 3.5 tonnes on my licence but for 7.5 tones+i have to take another test. Which test is it i have to take, i think it's either C1 or C but i'm really not sure. For the trailer i know it's B+E. What forms do i need to fill in to apply for both of these? Oh, by the way, i'm almost 21, so i'm asking in advance as i dont think i can do my C test until i'm 21?.

Class C1 is up to 7.5 tonnes and class C is for any rigid sided vehicle. I would advise doing what I did and go straight to class C so that if you need to drive a horsebox (or other lorry) over 7.5 tonnes in the future, you won't have to take another test and the expense associated with it.

Hope that helps x

Hi, for the 7.5tonnes licence it's the C1 and you need to be 18.
For your class 2, HGV licence over 7.5tonnes it's the C category and you need to be 21.
I am doing my training this week for my C test - thought I might as well as it's same price as the C1 and then I am qualified to drive a non-artic HGV as well!

I am currently doing my class 2... even though my box is only 7.5 tonnes, I wanted to do the class 2 so that I don't have to redo it if I buy a bigger box in the future.

It will cost you almost the same to do your LGV as it will for your HGV so go for it and get the lot!

I am doing mine in Jan, just passed me theory a few weeks back!

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Will definitley opt for the C test then, sounds like the best option. Only a few months to wait now.
