There isn't any anti-histamines in the house and I can't go out to get some ...

What can I do? I've put a cold flannel on it to try and help but it doesn't really work

Yup definately a horse fly bite as I swatted it while it was on my hand last night.

I don't think its bad enough to warrant a trip to a&e ? Is it?

Its just pissing me off now as I can't type

do you have any tea tree oil?

or other option is ice, try and get the swelling down..

umm.. cold tea may also work..

better to be safe then sorry so if was me i would be down A&E as looks like you had a bad reaction. if you can get to see doctor then try them , but i alwasy find i can never see mine at this time.

If you've a bag of frozen peas, wrap in tea towel and rest on back of hand. Do you have anything like bonjela or witch hazel you can put on? Find both those work well. Calomine lotion doesn't work for me but might for you. Have tried dock leaf on mosquito bites which was OK, not brilliant but worked a bit. You need the chemist really for antihistamine.
(Can you tell I'm an insect magnet?)

I've got a nasty one on my leg from last night, through my jods as well! I always react like you and definitely anti-histamines and ice

I react badly to them too. If its hot, red and a trail of red coming from it then get to A & E or your local walk in centre and they will give you a course of antibiotics.

This is probably a bit late now but if you can avoid taking the anti-histamines then I would. By taking them you are slowing down your bodies natural process of dealing with the bite and will end up with it for longer. I got 2 massive bites the other day and asked my dad (a surgeon) if I could take them to stop the itching but he wouldnt let me and went into a great long medical ramble!

I get similar reactions to bites, and these days always keep some anti-histamines in the house.
A frozen flannel is better than a cold flannel - I just get the flannel wet and stick it in the freezer for 20 mins or so.
I use HC45 cream twice a day on any bad bite

Thankyou everyone
