Just a few questions about Horsehage ...

1. How long would one bag/bale?? of Horsehage last a horse who lives out 24/7 atm, but will be in at night during the winter.

2. How long do they last before going off?

3. Which type of Horsehage would be best for my horse, a 15.1hh TB currently living out 24/7 but will be coming in at night when its colder at night (so probably not long now!) and she is already rugged up at night. Not sure yet how she keeps weight in the winter as I only got her in March.

4. How much does a bag/bale of Horsehage cost and would a small bale of haylage be cheaper/better for her? Or am I being reallllyyyy stupid and the Horsehage IS a small bale of haylage?

Sorry about seeming to know nothing, but I've never had to feed a horse haylage/Horsehage before and with the only hay available being £5.30 per small bale I think it would be easier to just put her on Horsehage/haylage. Thanks to anyone who can help :) Ryvita's with butter and jam for those who can ;)

I feed Mainbale haylage which is about the same price as horsehage but the bales are a bit bigger. A bale lasts my 16.3hh about 2 1/2 days so I get through about three a week. He does get other forage though to top this up as he is sooo picky when it comes to anything in a haynet. I feed haylage as he has had a tie back op so dust free living is really important and 99% of the time he will eat it where as with hay it was really hit and miss. I think they last about 4 days and tbh mine are never round long enough to find out :D Horsehage is just a brnad name for a company's small bale haylage.

i had an almost identical situation with a 15'3'' thoroughbred, he went best on the purple (medium one). the low one is too low, the weight dropped off, and the higher one (i think it's blue) sent him off his head!

Horsehage is good and smells nice but costs me around £7, lasts only a few days before going off so I only buy it when nothing else is available.

Have you considered buying a large haylage bale between a few of you from a farmer? A massive one here is about £23 and lasts alot longer. It works out cheaper too :)

Cant get the big bales as its soon going to just be me at the yard as the other person is leaving, although I will probably move yards if I can find somewhere, but for the moment I cant buy a big bale of haylage for just one horse. Now I'm not sure whether hay would be chaper than the haylage?? I am really useless at this :o

Haylage lasts for about 5 days once opened ( in winter). Personally I would always opt for the high fibre type first. A standard small bale ( marksway) would probably last your 15.1 for 3 days, depending on how much you feed. 1 bale weighs approx 20 kgs. ( 44lbs) Big bale haylage would be a waste for one horse as I doubt you would use it up in time. Expect to pay between £7.00 and £8.00 for small bale haylage bought in small amounts.
