Horsehage haylage for laminitics

Does anyone use it. i am currently soaking hay but if possible prefer not to use it as have a bad allergy. i have read the sugar levels are lower than most hays so am wondering if its possible to use for a pony that is recovering from laminitis.

You are right in that some haylage can have lower sugars than a lot of hay.
I have used horsehage high fibre (blue) for my laminitics with no problems at all. I am currently using a local farmers haylage with no problems too. I would have it tested though if that's what you use.
Obviously, all other precautions are taken alongside feeding haylage.

I feed Devon Timothy haylage which is v low sugar/starch and get on well with it

It's fine. When my boy came down with laminitis i couldn't source any hay so it was my only option.

I have used horsehage blue for ponies with laminitis with no problems

If it's not a branded make I would get a sample tested before feeding.

I have friends that have fed the Horsehage Timothy (purple) to their laminitics with no problems, in fact done better than on hay where their hay supply was too rich.

Gelston Haylage do a high fibre version; my boys loved it and were brought up on the stuff, as we were in livery on their farm many years ago. In fact my first horse was the very first horse to try their haylage when they first made it They are in Lincolnshire, so if you're worried, I'm sure they would sort out some haylage that's particularly low in sugar - perhaps a 'leggy' second cut and let you collect it (rather than buying from the feed merchant).

I've used the timothy on a pony that whilst not laminitic as such is very grass sensitive and the sort that could go that way given half a chance. Was fine from a foot point of view but did send him a bit loopy. I now use meadow haylage from a different supplier (skerne leys) and get on great with it

I would not use haylage for a lami at risk, tried it for mine and she got a flare up

Thanks all. I have always used gelston haylage hi fibre but pony has had first episode of Laminitis. Currently having her tested for ems and ppid as has fatty eye sockets. Vet advised soaked hay but pony is not keen and I am wheezing like an asthmatic. The haylage appears to have a low sugar content though.
