Just looking to get some haylage in for new 11month old foal -
CWG have haylage 22kg bales at £7.50/bale.....
But other smaller local feed store have the following under Horsehage:
Ryegrass 23.5kg bale - £6.90
Hi-Fibre 23.5kg bale - £6.96
Timothy 23.5kg bale - £6.96
My feed shop sells a horshage "bag" for £6.90. They have a new local product called horsepak for £5.50. it is just as nice. I prefer a product I can buy from Thorogoods in Essex for £5.05. they are all approx the same size and very good quality. The will deliver almost anywhere for a min of qty 25.
if you only have one horse, you cannot take advantage of the price difference in buying big bales. But Horshage is one of the best quality products and you shouldn't need to feed any hard feed if you use one of their products.
Re the 3 different types of Horsehage Mandk, they are different varieties of grass and so have different calorific values. One is high calories ie for TB, one is middle calories and one is low calories for good doers. I can never remember which is which but they will tell you in the shop. As B&J says, it's a top quality product, double wrapped, smells good enough to eat yourself, never any wastage. I've always got an emergency bag or 2 - came in useful in the snow - I've had it over 18mths and it was as fresh and fragrant as if newly bought. Not cheap though! x
As said Horsehage is a brand of Haylage - actually they developed it in the first place near where I used to keep my ponies when I was a kid. They used a pony on the yard as a trial as he has COPD.
Lots of other brands are around now and farmers make their own.
There are 4 types the original ryegrass one(green); a hi fibre version (blue) which is also ryegrass but cut at a different time to be higher in fibre and lower in calories; a timothy grass version (purple) which is naturally higher in fibre and I've seen an Alfalfa version (red) on the website which I've not seen in the shops.
I pay £6.60 for it Horsehage though I have used others with mixed results.
