hi,

just after some basic info really.... if anyone uses HorseHage or HorseHaylage bales - approx how many do you get through a week and what size horse/pony is it? Do you find them realatively ecomonical, whats the quaility consistancey like?

Just a pondering at the moment about if i should try it/introduce it for my liveries.

Thanks

The quality for the HorseHage products is mega. My TB mare was 16.3, and a MW type girl. In the winter, when she is v. hungry, she needed to eat 8-10kg of haylage per night. At a pinch a bag might last 2.5 to 3 days, but when the grass has gone, she could eat one every other day.

The benefit is that the quality is so good there is no waste and they really do not need hard feed too.

A couple of points to start you off:

1) It seems to be really yummy and mine get through it too fast, so the risk is either stood around with nothing to eat or very expensive haylage bill and fat horses.

2) On the regular grade my boy lights up to the point he is unrideable

As a result I use the 'blue' HorseHage 50/50 with hay when I use it at all. I prefer big bale haylage tbh.

I use the blue Horsehage. Because it is higher fibre the recommendation on the bag is to feed the same amount as you would hay weight wise, the bags weigh approx 24kilo and they are supposed to last an average 500kg horse 3-4 days.

In winter I do slow down the rate it is eaten by double netting haylage nets or adding straw, also suspending the net from somewhere where it swings about instead of the horse being able to push it against a wall takes them longer to eat it.

As has been said it is pretty good quality so there is no waste due to bad/mouldy bits; the horse eats all of it and I don't have to soak as I would hay as it is low sugar and dust free.

Eta It is more expensive than hay, but I don't have any waste, storage is easier and no struggling with wet, soaking hay nets so for the slight cost increase it is worth it for me:)
