Horsehage - Is it Acidic and does it cause gastric ulcers?

Do you mean haylage Peter? Horsehage is a brand.

It is more acidic than hay but not a patch on the acidity of stomach acid, so I doubt it would cause ulcers? Badly made stiff can be very acidic, you can smell it, and I've had one horse given hind gut problems by it, but whether that was acid or just that it was badly fermented, I don't know.

I feed it because it's good for their lungs not to be exposed to the dust and mould spores that are present in even the very best hay. I also like being able to store it outside.

i feed the small bags of haylage as i always find the quality excellent, never dusty, moulty or with dodgy stuff in it. I also find it neater and handier to store than unwrapped bales. I tried large round bales, but found the quality was never reliable in them and it was a pain getting them delivered. My horses look super on the haylage and i feed it adlib so i just feed a balancer alongside it as they all look great on it.
 
I feed haylege usually small bag .
It's is more acidic than hay .
I don't think it causes ulcers but it do think it can upset horses with senestive digestions and many of those have ulcers .
I have one that can't eat hay because it colics it can only eat haylege nothings black and white with horses .
There's a study going on to see if there's a higher incidence of diastema in horses fed haylege .
Few things with horses are wholly good or wholly bad .
 
Its unlikely to cause Ulcers but for a horse with a sensitive gut and with hind gut issue it is not advisable to feed unless you can guarantee that it is if the 'dry' variety. It does definitely upset some horses with compromised guts if too 'wet' and acidic
