Hi. Does anyone feed horsehage as in the smallish white bags of it. How much are you ment to feed and how long does it last you if you were feeding a fully stabled horse?

Only ask as I have a horse who can't be fed hay as she coughs on it even when its soaked so I now always have a few bales of horsehage in to use if she needs to come in in this awful weather. Says on the bag it should last 2/3 days! I know its compressed but no way!!!!!!!! My horse isn't over weight so not worried im giving her too much but I was just curious.

I reckon my horse would get through a bale every 36 hours if fully stabled !!!

Horsehage is really uneconomical, might be worth asking around the area to find a local supplier, I can get 35kg bales for £6 (the horsehage are around 22kg)

See, I don't think one would even last me 36 hours lol but maybe I'm feeding too much. My horse isn't huge either lol.

I live in quite a rural place and don't have many feed suppliers near me. I know its expensive but I like how handy they are!

Horsehage is ok for convenience but I would buy proper bales from a local farmer/supplier. I think you will find it so much cheaper & the quality will be just as good.

Yeah I do in winter but at this time of year my horses are out 24/7 unless we have a very wet night like last night. Don't want big bales as it won't be used and will go off and be wasted.

I'm feeding Horsehage at the moment as I've got mine in at night when usually they'd be out 24/7. The big one 16.3 eats his way through 4 slices a night, which is almost one sack of horsehage

If he was in 24/7, he would easily eat more than one sack in 24hrs. It isnt economical but hopefully its only a short term measure. One good thing, its such good quality that you know they'll eat every last bit of it

The problem with it is that it is too rich, which is why they recommend feeding such small amounts. I never use it as I like my horses to have ad lib haylage, so we wilt ours till it's almost like hay before baling and wrapping.

Horses love horsehage and would happily chomp their way through piles of it, but it wouldn't do them much good. And you'd be skint.

I feed one of mine Horsehage in the small bales from Fosseway. I pay 3.50 or 4.00 per bag depending on how many are delivered. A bag should last the avergae stabled horse 2 days but mine is out at night so lasts a week in cool weather.

My horse has been in all week with cellulitis. As our few remaining bales of hay is so poor I mix it with Horsehage. He gets through one every 2 days, and he has half hay half horsehage. So I guess if I fed him just horsehage he would go through a bale every 24hrs. It is very rich though and I would not feed it adlib, but it is very good quality.

If I feed him on hay only he eats 3/4 bale in 24hrs, just to give you an idea of how much he eats.

I use the blue horsehage, you would feed the same weight as you would hay. One bag lasts my 2 ponies 3 nights during winter, or 5 days during summer as they are out at night if that makes sense. It is real quality, the levels are all guaranteed, ie sugar less than 3%. If you buy the big bales, the analysis are not all that accurate as only a percentage is tested. I would hardly describe it as "too rich" with a sugar level of 3% or less! The quality is constant as it is dried indoors, unlike field made haylage. You can probably guess, I wouldn't use anything else!!

I had to get horsehage last week as no hay anywhere. I had to pay an extra 20% surcharge, as directed by Horsehage apparently, as its also becoming limited.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Or was I done?

I tend to half the quantity of HH fed in comparison to hay as as far as I am aware, it is very rich. Dont know if this is correct though.
