Horseman's calling, 5th/6th April

Just read the blurb and the idea makes me very uncomfortable, I don't think starting horses should be competitive and if there's enough drama to make it a spectators sport I wouldn't want to watch. Obviously I could be misreading it as have only read first page but not keen.

Having connections with Jason Webb through Polocrosse I would love to go and see this (unfortunately I am working) - I love watching Webby work and Guy Robertson too (again from polocrosse). Personally as I haven't seen Jason use "parelli" that element wouldn't bother me - he just uses common sense and ability (rather than the silly stuff you can see on a parelli show). If it was parelli, then no I wouldn't bother with it, but I can assure anyone that may be put off by this idea that Jason certainly doesn't use those techniques :-)
I cannot sing Jason's praises enough, he has worked with some amazing horses, and his own horses are just fantastic too

It's not a Parelli event. I'm certainly no Parelli fan, far from it. I think it's based on a long running event in the USA where trainers compete to get a horse as far as they can in a given time. The trainers in the UK event are from a variety of backgrounds. The UK event has strict rules regarding welfare:Competition will be judged on end result as well as how the result has been achieved i.e. most relaxed horse not first saddled or ridden to ensure an ethical competition:

Where horses are extensively rushed or over faced, trainers will be marked down.

How far a Trainer takes a horse over the course of the time allocated will be at the Trainer’s own discretion.

The horse’s welfare must come first.

The end test although consisting of an outlined pattern and small obstacle course will be taken totally at Trainer’s discretion.

All horses taking part in any Horseman’s Calling Event will be at least 3 years of age and only halter broken when used for starting.

For loading, standard supplied trailers will be used and horses will be provided by members of the public that have previously had issues loading.

ethically this is my problem with it. what happens to the above horses afterwards? too much ego and too many cowboy hats.

I was thinking along these lines as well. It's all very well marking the competitors down for detrimental practice, but it's a bit late for the horse by then.

The blurb says 'Based on the classic colt starting competitions of America, Horseman's Calling adds extra twists to challenge the trainers even further', which means extra challenges for the horses too, presumably.

I assume there are no female trainers taking part, or it would have been called 'Horseperson's Calling', surely. Maybe there is a Horsewoman's Calling in the planning. That might be ok to see.

Stacey Westfall won Road to The Horse in 2006 that this is based on. I would certainly pay to see her.

I like Jason Webb's way of working and Grant Bazin restarted The Moose for me, so I'm not ruling out that it could be good. So much depends on the competitors putting the horse first and keeping their egos out of it.

I've seen some clips from the US which were very interesting. I would have liked to have gone but because Parelli are doing demonstrations, it would spoil the day, so I shan't be going.

can anyone suggest a good/cheap place to stay over on the saturday night, I would love to go and may be able to build some bridges with my teenage daughter (:):):)). In fact off to book tickets now

It was open for people to apply, so I don't think there was anything stopping females taking part.

I've got reservations about these competitions, but have decided to keep an open mind. I think watching Parelli demo's is optional, I haven't read anything in the T+C's about chaining people to their seats...

Twiggy2, there seem to be quite a few good places to stay in the area. I'll be at Old Palace Lodge in Dunstable a couple of miles from the venue (Best deal £98 inc breakfast for a twin, 4 star). There's a Weatherspoon hotel in Leighton Buzzard too.

It's a shame there aren't any female trainers competing, but I think it will be fascinating to watch all the same. There's a shopping village too :-)

I am looking at their site and the prices they give are per room not per person so is your booking £98 for 2 people or for each person?

Twiggy2, £98 total, £49 each.

Tinypony, the horses used, like horses used in all of these demos, will carry on with their owners. I would imagine all owners will be present. However far the horses get, they'll be picking up from there. Here's a vid of the winner from last year. If that was my unhandled 3 year old, I'd be happy to go from there.....

That's pretty much what I thought Landcruiser. People further up the thread wondering what happens to the horses after the competition, the most likely outcome is that they go back home and carry on with their education.
I know one trainer and have seen the other working with horses over several days, so will be interested to see how this works out.

Good evening, I am the events organiser for Horsemans Calling. I thought I would reply directly to you with regard to your post. The event is a demonstration on differnt technquies. The judges are there to mark on the horse behaviour, how to bonds with the trainer, and the methods used, rather then how far the trainer has got the horse. This is an education demonstration but a spectators sport. I hope this clarifies the event for you but if you have any further questions please contact me directly on stephanie.oliver@horsemanscalling.com

Good Eveing,

I am one of the organisers for Horsemans Calling. I jsut thought I would clarify. Jason Webb will be using his own techniques at the event, but Pareelli will be there doing their own demonstrations. The event is a celebration of all techniques so that is why there is more then one method attending. I hope this clarifies, if you have any futher questions please contact me directly stephanie.oliver@horsemanscalling.co.uk

Many Thanks

Good Evening,

This is actually a new event and this is the very first time anything similar has been done in England. H&C have filmed similar events but never Horsemans Calling. There will also be a DVD out when the event has finished.

Many Thanks
