A schoolmaster is not necessarily bombproof..alot of people make that mistake of thinking they are...

LOL....both I think!

1st ad:

Being a school master doesnt mean a horse is suitable for a novice or someone nervous, it means they are very experienced in their field.

However from that ad it doesnt seem to say what the horse's field actually is?

Lance is a real school master, but not for a novice, because if you dont know what buttons to press, he will just plod along and take the pee.

There is a difference between a schoolmaster and a safe riding schol type plod.

2nd ad:

I dont know what you mean, she is 17hh so of course she is big, and that kid is about 2 so of course they are small!

I know the horse is massive and the child small, it just looked very silly - LOL

I would expect a school master to be a safe sensible ride and not require an experienced rider. Surely anyone can sell their horse as a school master and the when it doesn't behave as one claim it is the riders fault for not giving the right aids?

Sorry Horsegirl I disagree. IMO a schoolmaster is a horse who has competed, been there and got the t-shirt, knows its job inside out and is very well schooled. These types of horses are not for novice riders at all, they are for experienced riders who wish to improve. I could sell my horse as a schoolmaster but I can guarantee if he was not given clear correct aids he would take the pee and eventually be quite likely to misbehave. No way would I recommend him for a novice/beginner rider looking for a steady horse. Dont get me wrong he is not nasty at all but like many competition horse out there who know there job he can be sharp.

Absolutely agree Mrs T.

A school master is what it says, it is not a safe plod, nor a nervous novice ride. a true schoolmaster is a horse who can help an already competent rider progress as they have been there and done it, whether it be dressage, XC or SJ.

Many people label a horse as a 'schoolmaster' because it is quiet, but that is not what a school master is.

A safe sensible horse who will take a nervous rider is what it is, its not a school master.

Lance will plod round the school like a sack or spuds for anyone, but with a rider on board he is an Elementary dressage horse and a very experienced eventer.

A horse isnt a machine, even the best ones are only going to do what the rider asks them to.

I agree - schoolmaster means experienced in a certain field. A riding schoolmaster would perhaps be suitable for a novice, as would 1st ridden schoolmaster. A x country schoolmaster would be suitable for those learning to go xcountry, therefore would probably be forward going and bold, not what most novice/nervous riders would want.

The second picture realy annoys me. You see loads of pictures where people are extolling the virtues of quiet horses, very often youngsters by sitting on them with no hats, bare legs, or even worse they put a tiny tot with bare legs, sandals and a rather large looking hat on. I am sure the horse in this advert is a sweetheart, but its a long way down onto concrete for that tot. If I saw an advert like that I would not be thinking 'what a nice horse' I would just think 'what an iresponsible horse owner'.

Exactly, totally agree! There are different kinds of schoolmasters.

A sj schoolmaster might be superb at its job, get fast double clears everytime, but might be a nutter to hack out for example.

Schoolmaster just means that a horse is very well trained in one area, or is very good at its particular job - whether thats just being a safe allrounder, eventing, dressage whatever.
