Personally I think it's borderline distasteful some people saying that if they had their way horsemeat would be banned worldwide, simply because they feel strongly about horses being pets and leisure horses.
What about in Third World areas with people starving to death?![]()
Breeding horses for meat would be the quickest way to ensure that even more millions starved. The only advantage horsemeat has is that as the horse gets older, the meat gets more tender unlike other food animals. But raising horses is not all "cost effective" for making good use of limited availability of fertile land.
And it's haram under Islamic law to all intents and purposes. There is a question as to whether it is truly forbidden but the vast majority of Muslims err on the side of caution. Horses are used for "Jihad" (holy war) so mustn't be eaten, the small doubt is that obviously some horses wouldn't ever be used for "Jihad".
(Don't worry about the fact that tanks are used nowadays, the rules were written 1400 years ago and are still seen as unbreakable law)
Donkeys are definitely forbidden, that's stated quite clearly.
