horses age???

Happy new year everyone!!!

Is it Jan or May when a horse gets 1 yr older?

Someone has said they changed the ageing from May to Jan.

Does anyone know as I cant find the answer any where...

traditionally Thoroughbreds' get a year older on Jan 1st

Race horses all have the same birthday, 1st January however I believe it differs in various fields. In BSJA you may have a horse that is 5 years old, i.e. born May 2003 as I have however as it is now 2009, although he is still actually 5 years old he will not be able to jump in 5 year old classes as they now see him as 6 years old (Born in 2003 but as it is 2009 he is therefore 6 years old)....OK

TBs and competition age limits are for Jan 1st.

To make it clear in schedules they usually state ' Horse born in ''year'' ' for age related classes and youngstock.
