Hi,

I had my son 8 months ago and have been back riding just at my local riding school but it’s just not enough or the same as owning, I’d love my own horse again.
I had horses before my son was born but unfortunately my last one was put to sleep back in March before my son was born in July.
Would I be silly to start looking at buying another horse or should I just continue with riding lessons. Am so confused on what to do!

Do you have support? Can you afford full livery if not it will they be at home?
I bought a horse when I had my son as I was off work, I’d sold my car as no London commute any more and I was at home with time. My MIL was a great help though, and my husband when he wasn’t on his tractor.
Ours were at home so it was easy. I used to lunge while small had his afternoon nap, if I was stuck for time. Baby monitor just worked from his bedroom to my paddock.

Would a part loan be suitable? That way its more than just turn up and ride like at most riding schools. You can have more hands on looking after a share horse a few days a week and then decide if you are ready to commit to buying your own in a few months?

Yes I have great support from my family. I would be keeping them on a livery yard as I don’t have any room for them at the house

I’ve tried to find a part loan but it’s so hard. I live in NI and can’t seem to find anything

If possible I would try and find a loan/ share first as you may find it very different going from a riding lesson once a week to having a horse to look after 7 days a week, appreciate you had one before the baby but a lot has changed for you since then

Everyone's experience on this is different. To many variables. I kept my horse when I had my 1st baby, he was an easy baby and horse was kept at home. It was easy enough and then when life changed I moved her onto yard with assistance. I lost her 6 weeks before baby #2 was born and actually it was a blessing in disguise as he was a much harder baby than his brother. That was 6.5 years ago and I've never had the time for another since. My eldest (13) has ASN, my 6 year old plays football and that pretty much takes over our life. Who knows what my youngest will be into!

It does seem to be harder, or less common here than in England. I wasn't fussy but I really struggled! I don't know where you are exactly but some riding schools let you "loan" a riding school pony. Lusks in Carryduff, Ballyrusley Stables in Portaferry, maybe Gransha as well?

I don't have kids, but I can't imagine having time for a horse and an 8 month old baby! 😂 But plenty do it! If you found the right yard with full livery and decent support.

If say if you have a lot of money and can afford full/part livery and a supportive family/other half then it may be possible. If you are going to be working full time at some point soon I would say you would be better off staying with lessons. Babies take a lot of watching when they are on the move, life changes and everything ends up a compromise of sorts :)

Oh I must contact them to see if they have anything available as they are close to me
