Someone earning minimum wage and also a lone parent would take home £1378 - that is including no pension.
And lets not forget that this person would need to either have a non-working partner or someone else to look after their child while they work full time.
I did an online calculator to say that I am a 26 year old lone parent, with no job, no other income and no savings, living in a privately rented house for £1000pcm with one 4 year old child - as you will see in the screenshot below I would get £357.88 per week which would be £1554 per month. That breaks down into £318.34 Universal Credit, £17.74 council tax support and £21.80 child benefit.
No to mention I would also then get
- free prescriptions (£9.60 per time or thereabouts),
- free dental care, free eye tests and discounted glasses,
- free health travel costs if I am referred,
- free school meals for my child,
- free school transport,
- free and discounted childcare costs (to a point),
- £150 towards school uniform costs,
- capped water bills,
- half price bus and rail fares,
- £25 cold weather payments,
- £140 off of fuel bills under the warm house scheme,
- free/discounted gym memberships in some places,
- help with costs towards starting a new job,
- Virgin Media have an internet plan that is cheap specifically for people who receive UC, same with BT for the phone line,
- a tax free bonus on any savings up to £1200,
- a discretionary housing payment to cover a shortfall in rent or rent in advance if I move,
- £1000 towards having a child under the sure start materrnity grant
- not to forget the additional £1300 in cost of living payments..
