What do you do when you are ill?

I have shingles and am finding it increasingly difficult to exercise the horses. i have a 6yr old and 23yr old both of whom need exercising regularly. But i am unable to cope with them and there antics. i have no strength in my arms so riding is hard. i was diagnose a week ago and have coped so far but i am getting weaker and today i found myself to weak to work (again unlike me) and definably won't be working them tonight. so what do you all do in this situation? i am totally frustrated as i am not one to miss work or not to do my horses. This illness usually takes 3-5 weeks to get better so i really don't know what i am going to do in the long run.

sorry to hear you are feeling so poorly.
If you are on a yard can you get them put on part livery? If not, can you get a free-lance groom in to help? I would get them to do your general day to day things, and give the horses the time off. Unless of course there is someone you trust to exercise them for you? Try not to push yourself too much, and concentrate on getting better. It isn't like you are just skiving, give yourself a break and get well!

When I was kicked in the head I was unable to see to my horses for some months. The younger one was sent away on full livery as her veterinary needs were quite significant, and my older girl was kept fed by my mother and Weevil very kindly helping out.

I really wouldn't worry about them having a week or 2 off whilst you get your strength back. You're only going to drag out your illness if you don't rest properly.

As Puppy has said you need to take care of yourself at the moment or you will take longer to recover properly.

Is there anyone who could lunge them for you or do they have to be ridden? Would putting them on full livery for a couple of weeks be an option? Then you could just concentrate on getting yourself better.

Whereabouts in Sussex are you? There are quite a lot of Sussex people on here so I'm sure some of us could lend a hand if needed?

Hope you start to feel better soon.

I have had this horrid condition, and you will get better but it does take a little while to get over it. I have had some horrid health problems over the last few years and I was lucky enough to have some very good friends to help me through this and to keep my horse ticking over while I have been in hospital. Do not worry to much about working them you are far more important and the horses will welcome you back when you are well enough to ride them, if you are worried about them missing to much work do you have any friends that might be able to help you out, you will feel horrid at the moment, but you will get better I was about 4 weeks with it, and the pain is really not good, but it will go and you will be back to your old self again soon, take care and get well soon x
