I was wondering what veg/fruit horses can eat other than the normal carrots, apples, Swed.
Are there any others that can make winter feeds/play time a little more interesting ?

Sorry vegetables lol wasn't looking what I was doing?

Parsnips!

Mine are all furious that their daily bucket of parsnips has ceased whilst I'm waiting for my Landy to be fixed so that I can go and collect another couple of tonnes. They're supposed to be for the pigs but the horses do so love them.

(Mine are spoilt and get any spare fruit we've grown as well. So far they've had apples, pears, plums, peaches, grapes and figs. I let them out to pick their own blackberries!)

Pineapple gets the nod nod nod of approval and Folly quite likes cabbage and other similar veg, but Harry spits it out.

My OH teaches cookery at a secondary school, so we often have home made fruit salad that's been left in the fridge or miscellaneous fruit waste / peelings, strawberries etc. The ponies love it and H gets so excited he has to wave a front leg about while eating. :p

Bananas go down well with one of ours, the other looks at us disscusted that we could offer her our food! They don't go for citrus either. Cucumber slices go down well too! I think so long as you avoid potatoes and vegies from the brassica family (big wind producers so run the risk of a bloated belly and colic) then you can just see what they like!!

My last horse had
strawberries
blackberries
raspberries
parsnip
oranges
bananas
apples
carrots
brussel Sprouts
melon
blueberries
and loved pineapple

new horse thinks carrots will eat him so I dare not try anything more adventurous!!!
it can be quite expensive so go for fruit in season and on offer!!

I share a banana with my boy, I have the banana, he has the skin .... yes he is a bit weird ;)

He's not weird.
Lucy used to eat bananas inclu the peel. She also ate Oranges inclu the peel. Sprouts, cabbage, brokerly, Parsnips, Turnips, Basicly you name it Lucy ate it. I know you shouldn't but she loved potato peelings so she ocationaly got them as a treat. Oh and she loved Cucumber sanwiches. :D:D:D

ETA. I forgot she loved Damsons. You could pick them off the tree give them to her, she would suck the fruit off and then spit out the stones. Cleaver pony.
Also when we hacked out and came across blackberrys it was always one for her then one for me.

Ours have had blackberries, apples, carrots, raspberries, strawberries, swede, parsnips... but they hate banana!! My old pony would go crazy for watermelon :D

My mare has sampled and eaten just about everything in the fruit and veg world, bar the obvious no go fruits of rhubarb, tomatoes and potatoes.

Seren has eaten, apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, swede, parsnip, carrot, cabbage-all varieties, spring greens, broccoli, cauliflower greens, garlic etc

I tend to treat her to the lower GI fruit and veg varieties now due to her lami just to be safe

I used to keep my horse at a yard where the lovely YO used to have a bucket in the kitchen where she put all the peelings and veg bits and even cold tea and this was distributed daily round all the horses. I remember going to see my horse one day and he was looking in a rather bemused way at a teabag which had been thrown into the bucket!
