It really is true what they say.
My boy had the Vet to do his teeth today (yearly check up and rasp) and he found an old fracture in his upper 9! ? I was shocked to hear this but apparently it is quite common in this particular tooth, sometimes just from wear and tear and sometimes from eating something which is very hard. He said it isn’t a problem in horses as they produce more enamel and the tooth continues to grow and heals itself. He said it would have been sore when it first happened but will be fine now. The fact that I have continued to ride him unknowingly throughout and he hasn’t shown any indication he was sore and hasn’t reacted and thrown me off just shows these lovely gentle creatures really do not get enough credit. They really are very stoic.
He also had his eye looked at which had been weeping a lot - some of you may remember me posting about it a while back. The eyelid had become scabby so I was worried about cancer/uveitis, etc. The eye is clear and the problem is is he has too many folds of skin abouve his eye which is creating the scabs to form from the conjunctiva now that he is a bit older and is more sensitive. He suggested a minor operation but then realised his age (he’s nearly 23!) and said as long as I keep it clean and it’s not bothering him then that is the best course of action. He hadn’t looked at his teeth at this point! That’s the second person in a week to think he is a lot younger than he is! ?
So all in all, some good news!
A few photos of him from yesterday after a rather lively hack where he was feeling very well! ?
