quite a long one guys.
for a number of years now theres only been between 6 and 8 horses at our yard. all the horses got on perfectly well, each knew their place in the herd and there was rarely any fighting.

however a few months ago an old livery returned with a few friends. they do an awful lot of buying and selling and trading horses. the yard feels like a dealers yard now more than it does our cosy wee livery farm :( that was fine when their horses were all in a separate field from ours before summer turnout. their horses were obviously used to this life style. in total there are about 18 new horses at our yard, but the numbers and horses generally change every few weeks, new horses being brought in every so often and others being taken away.

the old livery bought a new one for her daughter a few weeks ago, 12.2 welsh b, very riggy. she told me he had only been gelded 4 months ago, speaking to her close friend she said it was only 4 weeks!! there was also a whole load of hastle with worming, some people refusing to pay for a 5 day wormer to move on to our worming programme etc.

my boy has bonded with the same liveries new mare (posted a thread about it!) and they have become inseparable. however when i bring my boy in, the riggy one goes straight to this mare and continually tries to mount her. when i put my boy back out he chases him away and everythings seems fine.

theres another group that are very close and an older gelding charges you if you go near them, apparently this is only recent behaviour. theres a mare heavily in foal in a separate paddock whos always shouting to the others so the horses are running back and forward constantly. i generally feel uneasy when i go to the field to get my boy, i used to go down the field and sit and relax, now im convinced im going to find an injured horse every time i go in.

got a text from sharer yesterday saying fox had a gash on his side and some other cuts and theres one under his head that he wouldnt let her touch. im going up today to check it out but im getting seriously concerned something bad is going to happen to mine or one of the others. 3 of our original liveries have already moved theirs into paddocks, i cant afford to do this with fox as he needs the good grass.

bit of a pointless post. my point is i suppose how are these horses ever going to settle with newbies constantly coming in and changing the herd dynamics and rigs and pregnant mare running around everywhere :( feel like since my YO died the yard has went to utter crap :(:(

i wish it were that simple amymay. ive been there for so long. fox was there even before i was. my family is close with the YO and we were there for him all through his wifes cancer treatment and eventual death.

i love it there, its my home away from home. i just feel let down that my YO has let these people run a mock. his stepdaughter is doing her best to keep things in order but she works full time and doesnt see the madness that happens, i think some of the new liveries are genuinely a bit clueless but someone or their horse is going to get hurt.

thats my worry :( i dont want to drag him away from there though, he is happy and apart from the place he was left starving in its the only home he's really had. i couldnt take him from my sharer either, the farm is the only place thats of pretty much equal distance for both of us. its just a really annoying situation. YOs daughter was so sure theyd eventually get bored and come back to where they came from but since they can do what they want here its not looking likely

You need to speak with the step-daughter and quickly, if you don't want to move. Most yards wouldn't tolerate dealing. At least ask for these horses to be in a separate turnout paddock. I was fortunate in that as soon as problems started, I fixed up my new yard. I say fortunate as although there was only a week between me finding somewhere and leaving, things did escalate and my mare panicked, going through a mains electric fence and head first into barbed wire on a neighbouring fence. Act now, Soph, or you'll regret it, later.

with amymay on this one-move yards, that many horses coming and going increases the risk of all infectious diseases as well as field injuries

ive text her before fran but shes so busy she never got back to me. hopefully ill see her today and have a proper talk with her. its good in the sense that since im good friends with the family i know if i tell them im thinking of leaving they would do something about it.

i agree jools, already had one brought in with a cough and snotty nose, shes apparently fine now though.. i cant move though, it would be more hassle then helpful

Not very helpful but just wanted to express my sympathy :( Got a bit of a feel for what was happening on Facey. Feel free to come and sit in Dean's field if you need a field to chill out in! In three weeks time when summer hols start i'll be pretty much setting up a tent in there ;) Hope they can get something sorted. Would they consider hiring someone to run the livery side of things properly?

thanks emma :( i just know that if darlene could see the place now she would be pretty raging.

i may take you up on that haha, dont trust any of these new ones to not kill me if i lie in the field with my book.. im not sure, J has been trying her best to keep everything in order but theres been a lot of tension because of it and shes on holiday just now. big man just turns a blind eye cos he "cba with fights" which is fair enough, problems with the boys mum just now so he doesnt need any more crap. just hoping i can get a hold of K soon so she can sort it.

can the original 6-8 horses not be kept in their own paddock so at least they all have consistency in their herd dynamic?with the ever changing number of horses kept seperately in other paddocks so they aren't risking the 'regular' owners safety or their horses?

thanks emma :( i just know that if darlene could see the place now she would be pretty raging.

I'm a little frightened just thinking about it... ;)
Difficult situation because as far as I understand he needs the livery side of things to keep going but its a bit big to work properly as a purely DIY yard - especially given some of the not so easy liveries currently in situ. Reckon he needs a part time YM but can imagine that will take some persuading. He should hire you to be in charge :) two birds, one stone n all that.

sophstar 3 of the originals are already in paddocks. 2 of them are laminitic and the other was missing her pal. the pregnant mare and her shetty companion are in another paddock as shes due to foal any day and the new liveries keep putting random members of their lot in the other 2 paddocks without consent. YO knows about it but says he's just leaving them to it, they can eat the grass down or something. none of our paddocks are big enough for all 8 of ours as they are just fatty's paddocks.

me too haha can hear exactly what she would be shouting in my head..
one of the new liveries thinks she's going to be taking charge and doing people horses for them in the winter as part livery and people can pay her, cant wait to hear what the big man will say about that. i agree he definitely needs someone about to keep charge on things. if it was up to me i know exactly what horses would be going where, shame i have no proper authority haha.

is it bad im waiting for winter again so they can go back to their own turnout?

Try goin into the argument with a solution to back you up, elekkie fencing or something, sometimes a solution makes the listener more agreeable, they dont have to think of one themselves.

yeah i agree MM, i think it was mad throwing nearly 20 new horses of all different ages and sizes out with our wee quiet herd. yeah every one was quarantined. thats one thing YO was strict on. every new horse is kept in for a week and also put on 5 day panacur.

The 'dealer's need to have a paddock away from the others. The YO needs to enforce it.

Do any of the new horses go into quarantine?

This would worry me as much as the crowding in the field - there are so many cases of strangles going around in the area at the moment that it is irresponsible of a yard owner to allow this sort of constant coming and going.

Personally, I wouldn't let sentimentality impact the decision and I'd be moving pronto.

im going to view a yard tonight chrisritch.

things dont seem to be much better now that the horses have been separated into paddocks..
the riggy geldings and other trouble makers are in one paddock, constantly pacing and shouting to the others, the ones in the main field are struggling to decide whos in charge. fox is in a paddock with shetlands and smaller quieter ponies. i think his confidence has taken a kicking. i put him out in the main field this morning and he didnt want to move. i tried shooing him down the field but he just stood at the gate, wouldnt eat just stood looking all around him. as soon as i put him back in the paddock he ran down the other wee ones and started eating.

he cant stay there forever as theres not going to enough grass for him all summer. the cuts he got dont seem to be getting any better..
