Do you think it's loopy lala??

My nag is more my pet than anything. We have a weekly half hour sedate lesson and the odd quiet hack in the week but I don't ask much of him really. Prefer snogging his face of than riding him!

I ride a friends mare who I love riding who I do a bit more with etc.

I couldn't ever sell him now, he's my man and I'm quite happy to keep snogging his face off and riding him very lightly, maybe up to four times a week in summer but minimal in winter!

I don't think he cares that he's wasted, I like to think he doesn't cry at night about the Hickstead champion he could be ;-)

So do you think keeping horses as predominantly pets makes me daft as a brush? Or do you think they love a life with loads of snogs?

Don't think any of ours have ever cared whether they are 'wasted' or not - as long as they have a life that acknowledges that they are horses.

I think that horses make fabulous pets. Nothing more wrong with having a horse as a pet than having a dog as a pet. Mine are pets too, though they can't be ridden anyway. I don't miss it that much if I'm honest, but I am lucky in that I have plenty of others to ride as part of my job.

Don't see why they can't be both if thats what makes you happy. I've had mine nearly 21 years, on one hand she was a good competition pony who then did me proud at seniors too, but has always been a pet too. I could have had my pick of homes, for a lot of money when she was younger, but never even contemplated it, she's a pet who had ability & I also enjoyed competing her, along with kissing her nose & doing her itchy stuff. And I can honestly say my daughters pony is her pet, despite the fact they both love riding too. When daughter outgrows her neither of us plan on selling her. And when mines an ancient retired money pit, I'll feel exactly the same as I did when she was in her prime.

No, ours are pets and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. They are loved, healthy and cared for and they are the correct weight xx

I dont see anything wrong with it either. If thats what people want to spend their money on its nobody elses business, so what if its expensive :)

Well, I draw the line at "snogging their face off":D But yes, I am non-competitive and my horses have all been pets, same as the dogs and chickens. With me for life (hopefully).

No not at all. I go through fits and starts with riding but like today, I took my girl out for a nice long walk in hand because she clearly wasnt in the being ridden mood due to the heat. A lady stopped me and said ah is she a baby. I was like nope just prefer walking her than riding her most of the time. I find it really healing just being by her side and not trying to get the most out of her all the time. I think you should just do what makes you and your horse happy!

Definitely not a loopy lala! I can imagine he is a very very happy chap!
I know my arab is a fab jumper at home but even happier when I under jump her competing :p Nothing beats an easy life right ?

I have no problem with other people having horses as pet's.

However I like mine to also be able to do a job too, however low key - I would find it hard to justify all the time, expense and potential heartache for them to be 'just' pets otherwise!

Like above, I couldn't care less how other people think of their horses. If they ride them or not.

I however don't have horses as pets.
